I know right? I was shocked when it hit the goalie. He's always been known for his big shot, but in past seasons, it's been very frequently off-target, which nullifies his major asset.

If he can use that shot and get more shots through, he'll have a place on the third pairing; rotated in and out of the lineup.

I've noticed our other D-men haven't been great at hitting the net this season, and then Gio goes and scores one in the same game Stone draws in (albeit deflected off a WPG player).

The young guys not playing is a bit annoying but unlikely to move the dial too much in terms of outcome at this point.

My bigger issue is refusing to try Johnny and Monahan apart for an extended period of time. Their even strength production has cratered the last two seasons, they don't generate chances, they typically lose the possession battle despite favorable zone starts.

If this team has even a faint hope of getting on a roll and back into the playoff mix, they need to get Johnny going. There is also value in boosting his numbers leading into a potential trade this off-season. I don't get it.

No, Kent doesn't nail it.

Learning how to play D takes time, it isn't like Valimaki is never going to play again. Also, the Jets have a very heavy forward group, and Stone lines up well against them. A couple games off will only light a fire under Valimaki, and may give him some perspective as well.

I think this is Backlund being demoted to the 4th line, and Ryan promoted to the third line.

I don't think Sutter has line numbers.

For me for the rest of this season I am not questioning the coaching decisions Sutter is going to make. This is one of the elite coaches in the league who has won 17 playoff rounds, 2 Stanley Cups (should be 3) and has a great winning %.

As a fan who longed for this coach I am giving him a super long leash and the players who have disappointed me so much since the 2019 playoffs they need to get in line or get out

Most people forget that Johnny was scratched by Hartley 5 or 6 games in his rookie season. I think we undervalue the press box perspective for a game or two, as well as lighting a fire under the player. I’ve no doubt both Dube and Valimaki are going to get positive results from this in the long term.

They forget because he was never scratched for 5 or 6 games. Gaudreau played 80 games in his rookie season. He was scratched once for once game really early, after 5 games of no production at all, and came back to score a goal, and he stayed for the rest of the season.

He was scratched the next year for being hung over. That’s it.

Well Saturday's game likely would have been a 2-1 loss if Brossoit completley shaken off his Oilers stink. So most likely back to a 2-1 or 3-1 loss tonight if the Empty Netter happens.

At this point they need a serious heater if they want to claw back into this thing.

Dube is younger than Janko was at that point but I don't a grand canyon of difference between the two at that point in their career. Dube far from untouchable IMO.
Like most college guys, Janko was a much more finished product when he showed up at 22 (same age as Dube is now). And he regressed every year. Dube’s arc doesn’t show that at all.

Arguable Janko should have been sat more in his rookie season. He was called up about 10 games into the year, and then played steadily. He could have used some press box time.

I don't agree that Janko really regressed between his first and second year, that came later. He showed progression through his AHL season and first two NHL seasons. I'm fine with Dube so far and certainly hope he turns out than Janko. But I don't see the sure thing that some see. No one thought Jankowski would flame out the way he did after his solid start.

I think we need to remember that Valimaki is coming back from a major injury and between the Finnish Elite League and the NHL this season, he’s already at 54 games played in a relatively compressed timeframe. Not sure that’s why he’s sitting, but a break might not be bad for him.

Looks like promotion of Ryan and a demotion of Backlund to me. Interesting. I'd guess Sutter is trying to find the Give a Crap button on Backlund night in and night out, instead of sometimes.

I cant say I understand Lievo with Lindholm and Tkachuk instead of Mangiaoane.

I'm OK with the veteran 3rd pair at this point, given the must win scenario. But at some point, you gotta get our young D back in.

Pretty sure Sutter doesn't care what I think!

Flames were the far better team Saturday...Jets were lucky when it was 2-2

kinda funny you take away 3 Flames goals but give the Jets full marks for their two which were an own goal on a shot going wide and a goalie down an hour early beaten upstairs

Dube is wicked fast and can shoot. Jankowski was more of an IQ guy but lacked a high end skill set. Completely different players. I have high hopes for Dube and am not concerned about him watching and learning from the press box for a bit. I'm actually encouraged by it.

It’s amazing what one word can do. I meant 5/6 games into the season.

Backlund definitely has the case of Daddy Brain lately. Terrible defensive reads and coverage.
