Default Clubhouse: NFT with Matthew Tkachuk

Anybody listening to Tkachuk on Clubhouse with the first NFT in the NHL?

I could be wrong, but I think it's a new form of social media chat.

NFTs destroy the environment! And they are dumb! That’s all I know.

It should be reported immediately to the SAA. That’s the Society Against Acronyms, for the uninitiated.

Neither do I. And when I heard what NFT stood for I had even less of an idea.

Once you look it up and find out what it is you'll probably think it's as silly as I do. Although there are obviously those out there who place value on it based on what some people are paying.

""Non-fungible” more or less means that it’s unique and can’t be replaced with something else. For example, a bitcoin is fungible — trade one for another bitcoin, and you’ll have exactly the same thing. A one-of-a-kind trading card, however, is non-fungible. If you traded it for a different card, you’d have something completely different. You gave up a Squirtle, and got a 1909 T206 Honus"

It has more to do with the underlying blockchain technology than it does the ridiculous little pixel arts attached to it.

I thanked you for the explanation.
I still don’t understand, and choose ignorance willfully.

It's kind of crazy how much an NFT consumes in electricity. I get bitcoin and cryptocurrency is all the rage right now, but the carbon footprint of those are insane. And it serves no real tangible purpose. It's just wasted electricity for the sake of wasting electricity.

NFT sounds like a contract clause for Tkachuk for "No F'n Trade" or "Not For Trade". Guess he's stuck with us for a while, eh?

I think of it as the next evolution of hockey / sports trading cards. The NBA version is insane, where a Lebron just sold for 200K+.

It has potential for wild growth. Part of the system is that the creator gets a royalty each time the NFT is traded. You will be hearing more and more about this.

I agree they are dumb, especially if you purchased a collage of images that you could probably make yourself for free. And yes, with all that heat and energy consumption for blockchains and cryto-currencies, it's a fad that's literally spinning out of control from hype. The bigger the hype, the bigger the energy consumption.

As opposed to physical Art which is mostly faked and validity is proved through providence?

Owning a virtual piece of art you can display and be the only true owner is more valuable then owning the physical art which could be fake.

Whether you like the art is a different question.

It'll be a matter of time before the Russians will have blockchain process hacked or corrupted. Either that or the blockchaining will be overwhelming to complete any more transactions. Once that happens, all crypto-transactions will collapse. It's not like digital rights haven't been hacked or stolen before - all digital intangibles can be hacked and faked. At least even with a forged art like Mona Lisa on your wall, you can still admire the smile and the beauty that's in front of you without logging into a computer and searching through a bunch of files to get at it. And you wouldn't care if another person owned a copy of it since you know it's fake and it cost a fraction of the real thing.
