I said almost exactly the same thing when we hired him. Darryl’s style pretty much depends on size, intimidation, and brute force. I expect some big moves in the off-season to improve in this area.

Staal, who's 37 and playing much worse than Monahan this year just got a 3rd and a 5th, so it seems to me we have plenty of time to still recoup near to a "2nd and prospect" for him. Alternately he could return to 30+30 form that he has been remarkably consistent with and we wouldnt look like morons for trading him for so little.

Brassard, 6OA; ~15G 45P guy traded around age 25 as the centrepiece for Gaborik

His 3 years in NYR he did 18g-45p, 19-60, and 27-58...then he fetched Zibanejad AND a future 2nd (turned out to be 33OA, was expected to be later though).

He then regressed in OTT and then has been involved in some really complicated deals.


Galchenyuk. 3OA in what was evident early on to be a weird/weak draft.

Mediocre first two years, then 20g-46p and 30-56. Two more seasons around 20g-50p (injury in one) before traded at age 24 for Domi.

A 19-41 (72gp) season in ARI and he fetched Kessel.

Then his numbers cratered, so his value did too.


GMs will chase top 6 C's until it's absolutely clear they can't do it anymore, because they are so scarcely available. Even if he shuts down this year and starts slow again next year, someone will start pay a decent price for him.

If you want to look at the failed trade in a vacuum, we missed an opportunity to get a star player and improve as a team. It's that simple.

And then for those that want to look at it with context,. Yes we probably would have needed to trade Mony or Johnny or whoever to make space. But they probably could have brought back a significant return at the time. Recoup assets lost by trading Vali. Maybe get a D prospect with just as much potential. Would we really have been worse off than the gong show we have now? I highly doubt it.

You’re way off here. Stone literally said on Spittin Chiclets that Vegas was the only team he wanted to go to and that he couldn’t sign an extension fast enough.

Tyler Bertuzzi would be an interesting trade target to play top-line LW if we do end up trading Gaudreau in a separate deal.

He has great scoring touch, decent size and really fast. I think he would fit stylistically and age wise. Could be a nice top 6 add without giving up the farm.

The expansion draft should be a great time to retool. Lots of players will be available for a deal instead of losing them for free.
