No, I wasn't on the call. It was a 3 way only, Dorion, Tre and you.

Incorrect. Stone was in on the discussions. Treliving had to know his desires for his next contract.

OK, so he was in on the trade for weeks, days until he found out that Stone wasn't interested to sign here?
Is that the scenario you are going with?
The guy was in on it till the last minute. Of course he knew his chances to sign him. Never mind his brother being on the team.

Were you not around then? Were you not aware of the period when Stone was finally made available for discussions? It was very well publicized. Of course Ottawa kept all parties interested for as long as possible until they finally had to free up Stone to talk. And my information is that Treliving was trying until the last minute to see if there was a way to do it. But it wasn’t to be, and he couldn’t make it happen.
And no, his brother would not undermine Stone’s interests by betraying anything he knew, if he even did.

I think it's important to note that Tre has been the most active GM in signing players out of college, and he's gone overseas a few times to sign prospects from there. Sure, he trades away picks sometimes, but he finds players to keep those bullets in the gun. Every GM with a team in the playoffs trades picks for depth at the deadline. Many of the players that get signed out of college/overseas don't work out, but neither do a lot of 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks.
Another thing is that he traded down a few times this draft to replenish picks he gave away. I would dare say that the scouts have done well finding players later in the draft anyway.

Sigh. No, it’s really not.
ETA: and Dale Tallon had exactly the same experience.

Because the ability to re-sign him has everything to do with the price being paid. Stone refused to commit to a number of teams, but Vegas knew they had him at a price they could afford. Just like when Calgary traded for Jaybo, and extended him two days later.
Vegas didn’t confirm their offer to Ottawa until Stone agreed to terms.

How could the one of the top markets in the NHL offering him a massive deal matter?
no really are you serious?
These things are obviously negotiated before trades go down

So pay him full value.
Instead we are stuck with Tkachuk at 9M. Good job Brad.

I think Wideman also signed very quickly after being acquired for a 5th.
He was a pending UFA and it was just a few days before free agency. The trade was contemporaneously announced with the extension.
Lindholm was extended about two weeks after being acquired.

The player has to agree this isn't a video game
he chose Vegas, a top destination for players...maybe the top destination
and Tkachuk is irrelevant to this convo quit grasping at straws

I don’t think Stone at $11M+ is that great, even if he would have signed here. He’s a great player but there are only 6 guys making that dough, and only 3 are worth it.

Vegas had a condition of a signed Stone before they gave a very hefty price that Calgary was having a hard time matching anyway. Meanwhile, Stone refused to commit to the same for not only Calgary, but also Florida. The Isles were in it to the end but Vegas got the inside track and signed him, the condition was satisfied and away he went.
