I can't speak for Bingo, but this doesn't sound like me. I have been highly critical of the mental fortitude of players as a group, but I don't think I have ever suggested this is a "leadership" problem, have I?

The players respect him and he is a terrific team ambassador. That is honestly the best measure of what makes a great NHL team captain.

Are there people denying that Gio is a liability on this team at this time?
He's done amazing things for this team during his career. Yes. Absolutely. One of the greatest Flames of all time. In his prime he as a monster performer.
All of that can be true, but we can also acknowledge that he's been in steady decline since winning the Norris. This year he's a -8 and is just plain slow out there. He has the occasional game where he gets pissed off and plays somewhat like his younger self, but those games are few & far between.
His play right now doesn't justify a cap hit of half of what it currently is.
I wouldn't take the C off him, but I'd definitely leave him exposed in the expansion draft.

I don't think so. Lots of posters don't think his captaincy is an issue.

The captain thing is like the coach cop out. Gio didn't tell Monahan, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk to forget how to play hockey.
Great captain Iggy got past the first round one time too. Team just isn't very good right now, to blame it on one 37 year old is dumb.

At least with Todd Simpson he kinda tried with the worst roster ever.
Bench Giold the rest of the season. or trade him for a 3rd.

Sigh.

I am trying to think of what system compliments the players we have?
I am not a hockey guy, so someone tell what system is best for a talent deficient team, who doesn’t work hard, and falters badly during clutch time?
I am thinking the solar system, as in tying rockets to to all of their butts and shooting them to the moon.

I feel they all go into the rooms and review the stats and that's enough without having the go to win in the game. But don't worry, our possession and shot stats look good!

One of the duties I expect a captain to have is to hold his teammates accountable. That's harder to do when you're consistently one of your team's worst performers. But either way, this team shows no sign of being accountable to each other and it starts with the captain.

Genuinely forgot there was a Flames game today. I've been tuned out for years, but at least I would try and watch a bit here and there.

This is such a Flames answer.
Enough with the acceptance of mediocracy with this franchise.
I don't think people would be consider Mark Messier as one of the best captains in league history if his teams didn't have lots of playoff success and cups. You know, winning at times that it actually matters.
Mark Giordano tenure as the Flames captain has amounted to one playoff series. Whoopdie frickin doo.
Even if the team as a whole having great playoff success is outside of the complete control of the captain itself, the results on the ice is what ultimately is the true measurement. I think the bar needs to be higher here.
It's great that he does all that. But decades from now, I don't think people are gonna be thinking as Mark Giorando as a great captain for the Flames since his teams didn't win enough to justify being a memorable era. What's most important is winning, and that hasn't really happened when it matters and legacies are made.
Given enough time, he'll be just as forgettable as Steve Smith and Todd Simpson.
EDIT: Well, maybe more memorable than them to be fair since he did get Norris and was very good for a period of time. But again, his teams as a whole didn't do much.

Yeah that's pretty crazy. Unlike a guy named GioforPM defending Giold to death... lol
How many wins would we have this season without Gaudreau on our team? 7?
I'm actually done with Gaudreau on this team. I want him gone. He'll put up 100points/season on his new team and win a cup in his career. Well unless we trade him to the Canucks.

Agreed. Definitely a great Flame. However, considering his age, his Norris trophy, the team result and his high value, the org would have been wise to look to capitalize on that via trade after they lost to Colorado. If he can be moved now, even for peanuts, do it.

Also the C is a letter. It allows Gio to talk to refs, and be a go to guy for media. There’s absolutely nothing stopping anyone from being a leader in the room or on the ice.
For me, I haven’t thought Gio has played worse than any other player lately, and better than a bunch of them. He whiffed on that shot leading to a penalty today, but then he was a warrior in the ensuing PK. He scored. He wasn’t the problem today at all.

I’ve been pretty realistic about Gio this year. I’ve advocated exposing him in the draft, and if you could trade him, sure. Doesn’t mean he’s lazy. He’s just old.

No one has been able to hold these guys accountable. Maybe it's time we stop assigning blame elsewhere and actually look to where the problem is.
Who do you give the C to instead even if you wanted to do that?
Gio's play has taken a nose dive no doubt. But I don't question his effort or work ethic. Father time wins every time.

Not sure if there are any untouchables right now.
Tkachuck, Johnny and Gio should be shopped.
MT is not worth his current salary, much less a 9 mil qualifier.
Johnny is a shell of who he was, hot garbage at 5-5.
Gio has a ntc does he not?
And yes, I am completely done with MT and JG, so frustrating to watch.
