I don't believe that that was his first choice. I would bet that under normal circumstances there would have been significant changes to the core last season. COVID has completely reshaped the trade market.

At least with Todd Simpson he kinda tried with the worst roster ever.

Bench Giold the rest of the season. or trade him for a 3rd.

Kind of difficult to do that when you’re trying to turn players into something they’re not and cratering their trade value in the process. Monahan is not Kopitar and never will be. But he can be a serviceable center when you let him play on the rush and not force him into the corners all the time. It’s hard enough to make trades already given cap issues plus covid. Anyway what’s going here is in no way showcasing our assets or enhancing their trade value. I imagine some of these players here would flourish when they’re not asked to do something they’re not. But that needs to be in a team that has a solid core, not 50% forwards who are good but flawed players.

I just don't think the assignment of the captaincy is particularly meaningful. It honestly doesn't matter whether Giordano or another player is the team's captain. It is a less impact full feature than choosing the #12 forward.

So why haven't Johnny and Monahan been able to produce anything off the rush since after the ALL star break in the first year of Bill Peters? I don't think they are being told "don't rush". I bet they are being told "stop the stupid turnovers at the blue line" because thats all they have done for almost two seasons now.

It is a sad day. My nine-year old is a hard core Flames fan and he lives and breathes hockey. He has even converted some of his friends at school to Flames fans. Not easy to do considering we live in Oilers country. Anyway even he is checking out. Today he told me he doesn't want to watch any more Flames games this year and instead wants to pick a new team to cheer for the rest of the season. He asked me to bring up the standings so he could pick out a team that is around 4th in one of the other divisions to cheer for. He is thinking about the Bruins.

So you and Bingo have been spouting about a leadership problem on the FLames. Who do you blame? not the 8 year captain who has ZERO playoff series win. At the end of the day Dennis Wideman has had more playoff success on the FLames than Giold.

Take away his C and give it to Lucic. At least he plays like he cares.

I don't think Giordano is remotely the worst captain in Flames history. I also sincerely doubt that Giordano is tradeable (without it being a pure cap dump - retention or sweetener) at this stage. I certainly don't think there are any teams offering a third round pick for him.

So, what makes Giordano a good captain in your eyes?

1. His teams have struggled
2. Multiple coaches because he let his team tune out the coach
3. He himself has done nothing in the playoffs
4. He leads a team that is constantly inconsistent

I'm as disappointed with Gio this year as anyone, but it's hard to hate him for it. He's in the later years of his career and age caught up to his legs. He has one year on his contract, you don't strip the C off him for crying out loud, that's the dumbest thing I've read.

If you wanna talk about exposing him to Seattle and/or letting him go after this deal, sure, that's a conversation at least and I'm inclined to agree. What does removing the C accomplish other than making the team look bush league
