See that's the thing that gets me. He played in the NHL, coached 3 teams to the ultimate goal ( yes 3 cause It was in!) and said that he did not want to coach just to coach.
Therefore he must see things in this team that we mortals cannot see.
We see now regularly Benny and Monny on the PK. We even saw Lucic in the dying seconds of a pk last time.
So it's like he knows the pieces are there, that they do GAF but lack confidence because they are paralyzed by ????
The pandemic? Not all athletes respond the same way in these troubled times.
Family issues?
Personal problems?
One of Darryl's best attributes is that he really wants to know you not only as a hockey player but as a human and this is where he will eventually unlock what is ailing some (or most) of our core group.
If he did not think he had something worthy in this group, why would he have accepted the job?

Because he got a 3 year contract? Evaluate players this season and see if you can make the playoffs. If not, I fully expect him to be involved in shipping some guys out.

Late to the party , but why is the game at 3:00 pm Calgary time? The next Canadian team that plays is at 8:30 pm Calgary time, and the Oil game is canceled WTF is up with that. It probably is a blessing in disguise for Flames fans.
Now get off my lawn.

I just don't see it as a GAF meter at all.
The Flames worked hard on Monday night. They carried the play for the most part but they were let down by two reoccurring themes.
1. Don't create enough dangerous chances so they make goalies look good
2. Forcing the play and making bad decisions resulting in odd man rushes or players out of position.
This isn't a team that doesn't care in my mind. They just don't have the horses. A Calgary Flames team with a Monahan/Gaudreau line that doesn't create any five on five offence is pretty much dead in the water.

Strongly disagree. This looks like a team that is being forced to work hard and are recoiling from the pressure. Too used to doing what they want.

Darryl said he had watched about 10 Flames games this season before being hired. Far less than most everyone on here. He was not an expert on the Calgary Flames nor should anyone have expected him to be.
He is forming his opinions quickly obviously based on what he is experiencing. But you have to expect him to take some time to see whether he can get Monahan and Gaudreau producing, for example.
I do believe we are going to see the team start playing better, more consistently as Sutter is able to extract more consistent execution from the players. I still expect we will be battling for the last playoff spot by the end of the season.
I really have no clue what Treliving will do personnel wise in season. In his comments, he sure seems hung up on the two week quarantine for incoming players from the US, so that leads me to believe he is thinking short term.

I am about ready to concede the ship has sailed on those two being dangerous 5 on 5. This team can still compete by having a lethal PP and some sound structure that limits 5 on 5 chances.
When I say compete, I'm not talking about a Stanley Cup. But maybe win a round. Because unlike 2004, the role players aren't as good and there's no monster like Iginla who can be counted on to score.

Flames needed to go 20-10 once they hired Sutter.
So far they are 4-3 under Sutter.
So would need to go 16-7 the rest of the way.
@ Senators: W
Jets: W
Jets: L

@ Canucks: W
@ Oilers: W

@Oilers: L
@Oilers: W

That gets you to 16-7.
Need to go:
Senators: 3-0
Jets: 3-1
Canucks: 3-1
Oilers: 2-2
Leafs: 2-1
Canadiens: 3-2
Going to be tough for sure but it's still possible IMO. Starts tonight against the Senators.

I agree that he probably was going off a lot less actual observation than us. Of course, his eye is a lot better than anyone here. A game of him watching probably = 5 of any of ours.
One thing though - I’m not sure he cares as much about Monahan or Gaudreau’s production as much as us. I’ve always thought Sutter wants to keep GA down to 1 or 2 and he figures that wins games. The production comes from somewhere in his mind. We all focus on the offensive end. He just doesn’t. He looks at the average goals for in the NHL and figures his team is good for that, and that his job is to get the defensive end set to be better than average.

Under Ward I think the GAF meter was in the red but under Darryl I see a higher GAF level but similar to when Iginla and Co. sometimes struggled to play under Darryl/Brent in that they are trying to play the right way which isn't always conducive to how they have had individual scoring success in the NHL. The last year Darryl coached the Flames Iginla put up only 67 points and that playoff series against the Ducks they played hard but they just had nothing on offense. I think it will come in time but there probably aren't enough games left in this season to come to fruition. They really need the powerplay to produce at times like this and it's not been good for some time.

Point #2 for me here. The Flames will play a few mins of great, defensive hockey. And then make a boneheaded forced play and odd man rush leads to a goal against. It's that forced play that keeps happening, and they're really really bad plays.
Have to think Sutter will get rid of that stuff but we will see I guess.

Remember that that time the Flames had like 4 games in hand on every other team and we bragged about not even having the free Ottawa points that other teams had?
Good times back then.

Watching these guys play 2.5 nice games to start under sutter and then slowly resort back to old habits has made this version of the team really hard to cheer for. In general probably one of the least enjoyable rosters this teams had in years.
Hoping for a solid win by 2+ goals but expecting a 3-1 loss.

Goaltending needs to be better too.
At 5v5 over the last 10 games for each team in the NHL the Flames are:
5-4-1 (16TH)
Corsi For: 52.3% (10TH)
High Danger For: 53.6% (10TH)
xGF%: 53.1% (10th)
GF: 24 (7th)
GA: 22 (25th)
Shooting Percentage: 10.1 (5th)
Save Percentage: .896 (28th)
One number on that page stands out as being a bit contributor to this team's struggles over the last 10 games.

TBF, the Ottawa team, and especially goaltending, is a lot better than back then. Which of course many people smarter than me predicted.

I actually think the Flames will sweep the Jets series. Winnipeg has only a single shootout win at the Saddledome in eight games dating back to 2014.
