Spin it any way you want, but Lucic is hot garbage. If it were not for his fists he wouldn't be worth dressing. I mean, he's no Sam Bennett when it comes to sucking, but of the forwards he always seems to be on the ice for more goals against than goals for. The fact that he ranks so high for this team should tell you everything you need to know about how its playing. All the fancy stats in the world doesn't hide his brutal giveaways, his inability to handle the puck, the number of plays that die on his stick, and so on. If he were on another team we would be unmerciful in stating how bad a hockey player he is and making fun of the team that employed him.

Just wanted to qualify this statement with the fact that Lucic leads all Flames forwards this year with 25 goals against when he's been on the ice at 5v5.
However, he's been on the ice for 18 Flames goals... whereas Sam Bennett has seen 23 goals against and only 10 goals for.

Taking Lucic has saddled the team with a brutal cap liability for years to come with no possible relief. NONE. What's worse, we are stuck with that play killing liability on the ice. The only way we get out from underneath that mess is if Lucic retires. We are stuck with that albatross until the contract is done, two more long painful seasons after this one. I would rather deal with a $1.9M hit to cap space over the extended period than the $5.25M hit while we're trying to leverage an opportunity window. It was another mistake and a third round pick doesn't make up for the loss of the position in the lineup.
|
Lucic has been one of the only forwards to be showing up every game with compete level. Is he as fast these days, no, but he is also very savvy with the puck, makes huge hits, creates fear for the opposition when he is on the ice, is a very good locker room guy and brings experience and the right attitude. Every time there is a hot line, he seems to be on it. I get the cap hit isn't ideal but the intangibles Lucic brings to the team cannot be monetized.
He replaced Neal who was a cancer in the locker room, was such a liability on the ice that the team was better off if he wasn't on the ice and didn't produce at any level (scoring, hitting, locker room, compete) At the time Neal was signed, most thought it was a bit of an over payment but it was a big name signing and we finally had a top RW'er for Johnny and Mony. It just turned out that we also got Lindholm and talks were that Peter's wanted to try Lindholm on the top line as RW. So I don't know if that pissed off Neal or why he sucked and sulked so bad when he got his shot to play on that line or any line after that so bad - but getting Lucic in exchange for that dumpster fire was a blessing.

You mean what you see with your own eyes tells a completely different story than a bunch of spreadsheet stats? And eyes are right?
And I don't care about James Neal. The guy is garbage. It was a massive mistake to go after him. Take your lump, cut him loose, and move on. Don't take someone else's problem on, because someone else's problem is likely to become your problem.

One or two small changes...and it’s amazing how much your paragraph applies to Monahan as much as Lucic.

Lucic is the least of this teams problems right now. One of the only consistent players IMO.

If the team gets to a point where Lucic is our biggest concern then we'll be doing great

You could play that game with pretty well every Flames player.
Spin it any way you want, but Girodano is hot garbage.
Spin it any way you want, but Andersson is hot garbage.
Spin it any way you want, but Markstrom is hot garbage.
Spin it any way you want, but Gaudreau is hot garbage.
Spin it any way you want, but Tkachuk is hot garbage.
And so on, and so on, and so on.

Actually the eyes say many of the same things as the spreadsheet stats in this case. I was agreeing with you.

Everything else aside, I just can't believe there hasn't been one single trade made by this team this season.

"What I've been told is this, if they trade him, what they really want is four pieces that are first round picks or players that are playing if not in the NHL, or elsewhere in the NCAA that were first round picks, and they're having success, they're not struggling. So that's why I believe it's going to be really important to see what they're going to get in return. But they want young players, that are probably playing in the NHL right now, that were first round picks. If they're not playing in the NHL, they need to be first round picks playing like first round picks at the level they are. So we'll see how it's going to turn out," Lavoie said on Sportsnet 590 radio late last week.

Not as expensive as I was thinking. Tkachuk (23) is worth two high firsts, Monahan (26) two mid firsts, IMO.

I presume this is about Eichel?
We'd need to go out and get those picks/prospects first...

14 day quarantine is a major factor. Hardly any trades.

Remember when people thought Monahan was better than Barkov?
Barkov: GP-31, G-13, A-24, P-37, +/- +11
Monahan: GP-31, G-7, A-13, P-20, +/- -5
(and I say this as a pretty solid Monahan fan)

Barkov is a stud...big, can hold the puck down low...that team is poised to make a Stanley Cup running
