There are too many teams at this tournament - I barely have a grasp on the top teams in each pool. It's crazy! Will probably get more into it once the field is thinned.

It's because there are provincial/territory reps (who are no names), 14 of them. Then you have to get the stars in.
Speaking of provincial reps, Alberta blew it this morning. That was a shot to get into the final 12 and it was a terrible decision to go anywhere near that lonely guard.

I dont think i have ever seen such a poor choice at this level of curling.
They made the danger themselves by going with the outturn...throw the inturn there and they are still undefeated...that simple.

Well, at 4-2 (they get the walkover against Courtney/Moulding) they could sneak into the last 12 still. Their draws-to-the-buttons have been good which is the tiebreaker across groups. Going to be a lot of scoreboard watching. It's too bad because at 5-1 they would have been a shoe-in, maybe even win the group.

I think Alberta will sneak in. By my rudimentary calculations 8 teams have 1 loss or less and 8 teams have 2 losses (including Alberta). And 12 teams make it. Alberta has one of the best draw-to-the-button numbers all week so I think they'll sneak in ahead of the other 2 loss teams. We will know at 4:30 pm!

Gold medal game was a bit of a let down - after the steal of 4 the game was essentially out of reach and it felt like both teams sort of knew it. Einarsson/Gushue are just too good at shot making to let a 6 point lead evaporate in half a game.
Hard not to feel bad for Sahaidak/Lott since they seem more like the mixed double specialists and seem to think the game a bit better than Einarsson/Gushue. They both are qualified for the Olympic Trails, but first Einarsson/Gushue needs to make sure Canada qualifies in the first place. Hope Einarsson is not curled out by then since she's got the women's worlds coming up too.

Bottcher rink shellshocked after blowing 6-2 lead after 7. Some really questionable decisions in 8th end and then missed some big shots in 10 to give up 4 and lose 9-7.
Well blowing a lead like that will definitely make you look tired. They looked awfully good for seven ends so it’s really too bad.
I don’t know who they have left to play but hopefully a couple of cakewalks in there since after what happened they’re not going to feel too confident.
Top 6 is what is really important here and Canada is currently in a 3 way tie for 4th, so mission accomplished so far. They have today completely off and then play their final two games on Friday (Germany and Norway). They should beat Germany which puts them at 8 wins and Switzerland would need to win their last 3 games to get to 8 wins. They've lost 5 of 6, so seems unlikely.
Seems like they are in good position for top 6 and could make some noise in the playoffs. The top teams are all really close in skill - it's not like the top couple of teams are running over everyone else. I think anyone who ends up in the top 6 has a shot at winning it all.
Complete side bar here, but I don't understand how the Russian ban on anything works. If athletes from Russia are still allowed to complete (just not as "Russian" but players from Russia) then what is the point of the ban?

And the point of the Russia is banning the country. Unlike FIFA for example, the Olympics doesn't limit entrants to countries or members. You can qualify for the Olympics as an independent.
Norway is at 4 losses along with Canada and the Swiss are at 5 losses. Canada must win tonight or else they will go to 5 losses having already lost to both Norway and Switzerland. There are no tiebreakers so they go to head-to-head.

Yeah very disheartening to lose that way, but no shame in losing. Edin is simply the best shot maker in the world.
Edin is the best but they had him beat easily as he was off last night. Unfortunately this one was self inflicted.
Hopefully they shake it off since as Girly points out, the game tonight be Norway is a must win or else you’re totally relying on help from Switzerland’s opponents (China and South Korea who are both at the bottom of the standings).
