Let’s try a Gaudreau - Mangiapane - Philips line then. Might just get some wild unexpected entertainment. At worst Sutter would get some great questions to answer in Sutterisms.
Johnny definitely had a bad game but if Monahan puts that partial breakaway pass that Johnny gave him in the first anywhere other than the Leafs logo and Ritchie puts that one timer that Johnny set him up with in the second anywhere near the net that line maybe ends up with a goal that game. Monahan’s hands are ice cold and Ritchie’s are basically non-existent.
Forget there was even a game last night. Seems the Flames did as well. Got an undeserved win, but makes up for the Edmonton shellacking. Sutter can't be happy with that stinker. Still need their best players to show up, which they don't on too many nights.
NHL refs are the most inconsistent across all sports platforms, NFL a close 2nd.
They 100% control each game, just gotta hope you're on the right side of the calls and when you are you take advantage.
If that isn't textbook Boarding I don't know what is
It is?
Quote:
Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact. However, in determining whether such contact could have been avoided, the circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-side” play which results in that player hitting or impacting the boards is “boarding” and must be penalized as such. In other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as “charging.”
Was Gaudreau defenceless? I mostly just dislike the “boarding” penalty as written, it’s basically a dice roll.

This was Craig Simpson exaggerating more than anything.
Tkachuk was going to give it to him but was reading the play to see if the would exit and it did.
That’s a terrible read! I don’t know why that would be a valid excuse at all. Play the percentages and the safe play, you’re in your zone, and outlet pass to you is the least useful play when you’re down a defence man. Ice it if needed. Give the D your stick. Ridiculous. I can’t believe how many people think that an outlet pass is an excuse for this play at all.
No, the play isnt the end of the world or the worst thing we’ve ever seen. But it was pretty dumb for the “team first and cerebral” player that we have in Tkachuk.
The last person on your team, when in your defensive zone, who needs a stick, is a winger. The most important person to have a stick is the defenceman.
