It's really difficult to watch Gaudreau attempt to play fast-paced hockey (which he is trying to do) on a unit with two linemates who are just so, so slow.
He breaks out with speed... but neither Monahan nor Ritchie can find separation even remotely in time. So he's forced to fend for himself.
I would try Lindholm on that line.

I want to see Gaudreau-Lindholm-Dube. Gives the team a fast line that should be good at retrieving pucks. And all three guys can easily gain separation on breakouts. No more of Gaudreau trying to do everything all by himself while he waits for his linemates to get up the ice.

Gaudreau may indeed be waiting for linemates a lot, but I didn’t see it tonight. For some reason Ritchie was doing a lot the attempted zone entries.

I don't think that's completely accurate, but I'll go back and look at their shifts.
I know that on Wednesday, that line attempted just eight controlled zone entries all game. Three ended with Ritchie turnovers.
They dumped the puck in 15 times and came away with possession twice. So... if Ritchie is supposed to be the one on that line retrieving pucks, he's not doing his job at all.

No wonder that they struggled...

I think it was more that the Leafs had last change then trying to get Monahan and Gaudreau Reps out there, even a blind man can see they are our weakest defensive and unfortunately offensive line recently.

Yeah, but Sutter must know if he gives them a D zone faceoff, Matthews is coming out with last change.
I have a bad feeling Leafs are going to go 0-2 this weekend

Richie,Bennett and Lucic all in the lineup tonight. Tkachuk on first line. Sutter has some jam on every line tonight. I think they are going to try laying a pounding on us physically. Remains to be seen. I still see needed improvements physically in this roster when you cross check it to the Flames lineup.
If Andersen stinks the place out tonight, Campbell will have the net starting Tomorrow.
I don’t like Andersen starting.

Those Flames players are in the lineup every night...

You know it's going to be a long night when you allow a goal off the first shot. Might as well have spotted the Flames a 1-0 lead at opening faceoff. That's either the fourth or fifth goal in the first five minutes that we've given up during this losing skid.

Andersen is the biggest loser I’ve ever seen in a Leafs uniform. Not surprised in the least he let in the first shot of the game. Absolute trash.

It’s a stop a good goalie makes. You can tell Freddy’s confidence is shot. He over committed way to much on that second one.
Not all of his fault, Dermott was doing nothing on that play too.

At this point Campbell > Andy and it's foolish to argue otherwise

As much as I hate to admit it, it's looking more and more like it's going to be yet another wasted season with this team, due to goaltending. Andersen hasn't looked confident at all tonight, and there's little chance of us obtaining a quality starting goalie before or at the deadline.
But with our $40 million forwards, we should be able to overcome/outscore our problems. Yeah, right! smh

Sick and tired of watching this f***ing garbage named Andersen, get him the f*** off this team please. And how does Lucic not get called for a cross check ? Blatant cross check 5 feet away from the refs, directly results in a goal 2 seconds later. But they call the one on Holl earlier which was 10x softer, absolute insanity. FFS. Beyond frustrating watching this ####.

Also, not to hate on the Flames forwards (or the Jets, for that matter), but are they so incredible we need to dedicate a line and basically re-jig our whole lineup to stop them? Like, is Gaudreau or Scheifle going head-to-head against Tavares really worth all this effort to avoid?
Quote:
I don’t think Holl’s been bad, really, and Tkachuk clearly sold the penalty call on him. I mean, Rielly and Tavares are directly responsible for 2 gift goals and, regardless of what happened before it, the Tavares call was legit. Sure, it’s not all about big mistakes but turnovers that lead to practically unstoppable chances are…not good. And I’ll say that the call on Mikheyev was just as soft as the call on Holl, although optically I can see why the refs blew the whistle.

Just when Dubas thinks he's solidified the defense, we've sprung a huge leak between the pipes.
Is it too much to ask for consistently good goaltending?
Quote:
A great GM recognizes a chink in the armour, before it becomes a gaping hole. Dubas can suggest as much as he wants, that he is after a top seven forward. Man, what is that lol?
But every GM vulture in the league that is out of the playoff race, knows they can steal his first round pick, Nick Robertson, and one of Lilly and Sandin.
Worst bluff ever bro. Anyone who knows hockey, knows that you have wonderful forwards.
But they also know you have a late first rounder and three decent youngsters in the pipeline.
They also know, Toronto, could via circumstances, win the Stanley Cup by coming out of a weak division, and play a beaten up Tampa or Boston, that needed 14 games to get to the Leafs.
I am a little disappointed, in Dubas, for using such a grade one poker trick. I doubt it fooled any decision makers who own goalies.
He probably lost a lot of respect from his fellow GM's. They all know what he needs. Everyone knows.

Just saw the entire Holl Ratboy fight. Tkachuk is such a f***ing POS how he engages and then how he grabs Holl by the neck of the shoulder pads and skew foots him down to the ice in a “take down”’
( take downs are the dumbest thing ever in a hockey fight btw - you stand in there and go until the linesmen break it up )

If you want to be a top line, you have to play against top lines. you can’t improve on that without getting thrown in. He’s asking for more from them.
Yeah this is what I think.
We hear it all the time. Sutter is all about giving you a guy you need match up against, and outplay him.
I have no doubt tonight he told Monahan you need to outwork Matthews, and told Gaudreau he needed to outplay Marner.
I kind of like it. These guys need to start being more hungry and be more confident going up against other top guys.
I don’t love pairing them with Ritchie if you’re going to do that to them though. Might want to put Dube or Mangiapane with them if you’re going to do that.
I still think Leivo should probably be with Lindholm and Tkachuk and Dube with Monahan and Gaudreau.
