Mario buying into the club was the bigger driving force though. Also had they not gotten the casino and all that, chances are they were toast. Duha (i think it was him) had a tremendous article years ago about all of it.
Really though that lottery was probably the fairest one ever held by the NHL IMO.
4 teams including the Pens AND the Rangers had the highest chance of winning...and thats what happened....one of them did.

Friedman is by far one of the best hockey journalists out there - objective, well-spoken, level and not kissing any asses on TV. All McDavid envy aside, how can anyone not like him?

The odds weren't very good though...all teams had a shot
McDavid talk is annoying but people were hyping McDavid and the Oilers like this last year. Made them losing in the play in round even better. They have zero hope of beating a deep playoff team. They are middling despite McDavids season and won't be getting a high draft pick for once.
Oilers can say they are in first place but games played say otherwise and let's be real this division isn't very good.

I totally agree, but it should be pointed out that Pittsburgh, NYR, CBJ, and Buffalo all had only a 6.3% chance of winning.

Does he though? I could see if he played for a team with a league-wide fanbase and international appeal, like New York, LA, Montreal, or Toronto. But languishing in Edmonton, has he really increased total viewership and ad revenue that much? I would love to see the evidence if that is true.
No doubt the directive comes from Rogers directly, but I think it's more a case of them trying to wag the dog more than anything else.

Right....but moreso than all the other clubs.
One of those 4 clubs was most likely to win. Isn't that how weighted odds work?
The Flames were one of the clubs that ended up getting most screwed too.

His CAL thing is so lame it makes me hate him. I dont think it’s disrespectful or anything it’s just dumb. Ignorant for the sake of being ignorant.

What concerns me most is that we'll all be cheering for the Leafs this year as our hope in keeping the Oilers out of the Stanley Cup finals.
Its a deal with the devil you just have to make.

Good thing you weren’t around in the 80s when Gretzky, Messier, Coffee etc were doing their thing.

My favourite part of that draft was watching smug Kevin Lowe laughing at Calgary's draw @ #26, only to be the next team landing in the #25-spot.

What are you going on about?! The Oilers are a good bet to get bounced in the first round.

He's not being ignorant. He's trolling people and has admitted as much.

I don’t know the backstory but I bet he did it as an accident once, people got all bent out of shape, so he’s continued it.

Yup...remember it clearly. Not just laughing but clearly celebrating it.
His complete lack of professionalism was astounding.
Then karma paid that man a surprise visit about 2 minutes later. It was glorious.

I’m aware. I respect his dedication to his troll bit about as much as I would respect someone here who had a troll bit and stuck to it. It’s not funny or edgy it’s stupid.

One thing I will say about McDavid, is I don't hear anything about him in the states. He might as well be the same as Huberdeau or Barkov down in Florida. Great player that the media doesn't care about.
NBC in its coverage continues to shove the east coast teams down our throats and still emphasize Crosby and Ovechkin. Its the same mix of Pens, Caps, Rangers, Flyers and Bruins that cycle through all the coverage. They sprinkle in some midwest stuff with Hawks/Blues or maybe some California stuff with Sharks/Kings, but they continue to ignore Canadian teams; more so this year since you guys are playing on your own of course.

Haha I actually don't mind the CAL thing. Makes me feel like we in California or something...everybody goin surfin'.
He does the same thing with the Jets, saying WIN instead of WPG. Jets fans get mad at him for it too, from what I've seen on the Twitters. Think he just defaults to whatever the first 3 letters of the city name are.

Well there will be an actual good team before the finals...Oilers won't get that far though
