Lemieux and Crosby’s tenures overlapped for frigg sake.
The Crosby lottery still feels like it was fixed so there is that. But at least there they did suck for a while, and I feel bad that they lost a good 8-10 years of prime Lemieux due to injuries.

The Oilers getting McDavid is the still one of the most ridiculous things that's ever happened in NHL history.

They shouldn't even have been eligible to win the lottery after having 3 1st overall picks in the 5 years prior.

Fact that NHL didn't have a rule about that when they changed the lottery odds was so stupid.

No it isn't.

It was the same for Gretzky in the 80's. We just didnt have a hundred different platforms for it to be aired on.

McDavid is good for business. On a whole bunch of fronts and in a whole lot of places.

Its completely and understandingly annoying for rival teams fans, but it makes sense for the league and its broadcast associates.

Just makes it better when your team beats them.

The big hope needs to be them having an early playoff failure again this year and then he gets fed up and asks for a trade.
Have they really been drafting better under Holland? Holloway looks okay but Broberg was a pretty sketchy pick.

Well honestly it's not that hard to draft better than they did under Chiarelli.

Holloway looks good. Broberg was coming around in the SHL before his injury. (Although thank god they didn't take Zegras)

Savoie and Lavoie both look like they could be middle 6 options. Personally I like Tullio's skill.

Still not amazing but IMO it's better.

The only saving grace is that the Oilers, in my opinion, have ZERO chance of winning the cup. They can't get past the likes of Tampa/Boston/Vegas/Washington in my opinion, let alone Toronto in our own division.

They have easily the best player in the world, and perhaps the 2nd best in the world, yet they will not win the cup. As awesome as it must be to be able to watch these two guys on your team night in/night out (as undeserving that franchise is), it must be frustrating knowing you're wasting these years away with what is otherwise, a very subpar team.

As far as his attention in the media goes though, I think it's justified. He's on another level. You can literally pick out when he gets 'the right type of momentum' in his own zone, and can predict he's going to have a scoring chance at the other end. He is unstoppable, as much as I hate it.

If he can't, then what an absolutely sad, sorry indictment of that pathetic franchise. I mean, my God the Oilers have had four #1 picks between 2010-15—one of which was among the best players in the draft over the last three decades. It is embarrassing that after drafting Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid all before 2016 that they still have only one playoff appearance in five years since McDavid was drafted.

Edmonton is no good.

Simple logic will tell you that's not the case though.

If they were going to decide who got Crosby they would have had him go to either the Rangers, Blackhawks or the Kings. The marketing tool he would have been for the league in those markets would have paid 20, 30, 50 times more than placing him in a small market.

By all means let's drive away a premier hockey insider like Friedman from doing media spots for the Calgary market...again.

The Oilers winning the McDavid lottery has to be pretty indisputable evidence that NHL lotteries are not fixed. There was not a single happy person in the NHL outside of Edmonton that day form the other organizations all the way up to Bettman and the owners.

RE: some of the replies.. some of you didn't grow up surrounded by Oiler fan extended family who chirp you every single chance they get, and it shows.

Must be nice to be removed enough in the BoA from Oiler fans that you can actually enjoy and appreciate McLotteryballs. Screw that guy, and all the loud-clucking fans who wear his jersey.

Wish I could FF 5 years when he's no longer an Oiler, then maybe I'll appreciate him.

I might take some umbrage with your first assertions get, but I flatly reject the second. Nathan MacKinnon might be the best player in the world, and he is unequivocally better than Draisaitl.

He's a Rogers employee doing a spot on a Rogers radio station. Does he have a say in if/when he does spots?

Agree with the majority of comments, if you don't like it turn it off, as much as it sickens us hes an oiler, hes the best player to come to the league in years & people want to hear about him. Its not just Elliotte, its also Kelly Hrudey and many others.

I don't think it can be argued for McDavid, but I will agree about Mackinnon likely being 2nd best. With the new alignment, we just don't see him anymore, which is obviously a great thing given his past performances vs us. Perhaps I've built up a defense mechanism to deal with my PTSD from that playoff series.

Regardless, best player in the world, and for sure a top 5 player in the world behind him, though I do think he's not far off from Mackinnon.

Gretzky was on a Saturday morning cartoon with Jordan and Bo. That’s how bad it got.

Absolutely he does.

He already quit 960 once in an over reaction to the over reaction of saying something on the air in Calgary. Warrener and Boomer talked him into coming back though is my guess.

Fair.

But it always seemed fishy with all the ownership, relocation, and rink issues that were going on in Pittsburgh at the time.

Winning that lottery pretty much singlehandedly saved the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

He's a good player. I'm getting a little tired of his left right left head fake he constantly does. That's my best ball hockey move. It works for him though.

If I recall correctly there was a span a few years ago where he stopped doing spots for 960 and he implied that due to the response he would get it wasn't worth the headache.

I wish I could find a source or remember in better detail, but I do recall a period where he was absent from Calgary sports radio for this reason.

He didn't single out just SN960. Friedman stopped doing local radio spots altogether.
