That long 2 minute shift in the 2nd summed it up for me against a dead tired Oiler group. We dominated possession and had great puck movement, but only made 1 cross-crease pass (Dube to Lindholm I think).

Edmonton was exhausted and basically standing still, and we maybe had 1 good chance and a bunch of bad decisions to blow the opportunity.

Sutter is going to be pissed.

5v5 the systems still produced great results tonight but 3 HORRIBLE turnovers led to the first 3 goals (1st and 3rd goals were total gimmies), followed by lazy, dumbass penalties that led to the next 2. I don't even know how Nurse was so open for the 6th goal and the 7th goal was just a brutal goal to let in.

The 5v5 system still produced good results, but overall just a pathetic performance filled with brutal unnecessary turnovers + penalties.

I mean I feel like it kinda has to be said but when you’re playing a team that has a guy that in a regular season is on pace for 135 points... it’s gonna be tough to contain him.

Yes 7-3 isn’t exactly what I’m getting at but, you can pretty much bank that you’re starting the game down by 2 when McDavid is coming to town.

So brutal the Oilers of all teams got him. But you have to be honest, 53 points is... like wtf is that.

They were down 2-0 early.

Too many high end guys not ready to be their best.

Said it before...most games are Won/Lost in the first period .

So, if markstrom needs a rest what is domingue like? I just don’t have that much faith in Rittich.
Why? I think, if anything, Rittich should have gotten more starts of late.

Markstrom and Rittich have been about the same quality outside of the first half a dozen games where markstrom looked vezina calibre.

Should be interesting who sutter gives the first of the b2b vs Toronto to.

Onward. The target with Toronto has got to be 3/4 points.
The Leafs are a shoo in to take the 2nd game. They're a rested team, while the Flames will be playing their 3rd game in 4 nights.

Season is pretty much on the line on Friday.

Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to greatness and move on. McDavid and Draisaitl are purely greatness, best and second best player on the planet.

No shame getting dominated by the Oilers, yet again.

They have a terrible record against not the Flames/Sens

Rittich is 93.75% against Toronto in his career. That doesn't worry me.
One of his best teams. Plus he has better stats than Markstrom this year.

I think the Flames should start playing Rittich a bit more. It might benefit Markstrom.

Leon Draisaitl is not the 2nd best player on the planet. In fact I don’t think he’s even a top 5 player. That’s a hill I’m willing to die on.

Watching him he just doesn’t scare me the same way a McDavid or a MacKinnon does. He’s obviously a great player. But absolutely not in the same league as McDavid. That guy is ridiculous.

Can't win em all. Despite all the negativity, I don't think the Flames were dominated. Just seemed like every Oilers chance went in. I'm sure if we ask Markstrom he would like many of those goals back.

What I will say is the Oilers are a PP team and brutal penalty by Ritchie was just stupid. Sit him next game.

But who should be? Tkachuk is almost as bad a skater and not a defensive whiz. Bennett’s a bit better but I think Lucic needs more minutes to be effective.

Lucic is OK on shutdown when they play an effective forecheck, which is a defensive tactic. They played it badly today by giving Smith the puck - he made generally smart plays. If they don’t prevent a smooth breakout, his foot speed then is an issue.

This is what I saw too. The Oilers scored on every chance they had, and even got a couple without good chances.

I won't say the Flames had bad luck though, I think their shooting was brutal - everything was into Smith's pads. The Flames did not play as poorly as the score suggests, but it just wasn't their night.
