We won't have any games in hand on the Leafs at the end of the week.

Ah, didn't realize they had such a slow week. Still, the Leafs are so cold right now, if the Flames continue to play hard they should stand a very good chance.

It really felt like it was 5 or 6 penalties against on a good night for this team pre-Sutter.
Either way, playing more with the puck and less time shorthanded coinciding is no coincidence.

It hasn’t been the amount of penalties - more that they were so often in the first period, which killed momentum and/or put the Flames in a hole.
They’ve been the better team than Montreal in both games under Sutter so less penalties makes sense like you say. Plus, I feel like refs, while not actually managing the game, are heavily influenced by the flow of the game - if a team is pushing hard they kind of get caught up and look for a penalty by the other team.
And maybe they are more scared of getting chewed out by Sutter than other coaches.

Move the feet = less penalties. Love it.

One can only hope that last point is a factor. I didn't consider it before but you wonder if that same "respect" factor that affected the room also spans to the guys in stripes.
There's always going to be a game management influenced call or two per night, but you wonder if they take less liberties with their calls out there with the surly 2 time cup winner watching them compared to when Ward would silently look on.

Interesting idea, but I don't really believe the refs care at all about who the coach is. The refs job is to protect the star players and manage an exciting game, not calling the game fairly.

Oiler fans are already complaining about the reffing tonight. They say this guy lets way too much go without calling penalties.

If the Flames go 4-0 in regulation this week they will be 3pts behind the Leafs with even games played. They need to win their 2’in hand against the Oil and then win their head to head.

It is a national game. Does that make a difference?
