You have to look back - there was essentially a claim that Sutter saying the system was fine, just not the execution (or words to that effect) was done to get Montreal to game plan for Ward's system and then surprise them with the new one.

I'd be more willing to buy "he didn't want to throw Ward under the bus" or "he wants to tell the players they need to execute" as an explanation for why he supposedly wasn't telling the truth about the system. Or, as I suspect, he said what he thought. Which doesn't mean he isn't going to change it, or at least tweak/improve it.

Cool, so just disagree with the poster who made that claim.

But once you made the more general claim that Sutter speaks the truth, that's a different argument. And here we are.

Well, I did and then others jumped in. Look back.

So I checked back in and worked through those last few pages.

I think people are mainly driving by each other.

Sutter wasn’t specifically trying to hoodwink Montreal, but he sure as anything isn’t going to tell the media or any opponent specifically what his planned adjustments are. That would be silly.

To me, I see it as a quick answer which is being overanalyzed. A quick answer that effectively cut off further related questions.

Sutter may be able to stop a reporter but he can’t stop CP

And TBF, he answered at a time when he probably hadn't even seen a Ward practice, and had only looked at 10 games by his count (I bet you could check which ones because they'd have been ones when Anaheim wasn't playing at the same time, and for sure it would have been the big Ottawa loss and the big Ottawa win). All he really had to go on is what Treliving tells him Ward does and what he's seen within the games he did get to watch.

So maybe he gets in there and says "wait, that's not what I even thought the system was - we DO have to change it".

Back when we hired Gulutzan, a common refrain was

"this new system is basically a variation on what 90% of the league uses. Hartley's system was what the other 10% of the league uses"

In that sense, I don't think it's crazy to say that on that spectrum of extreme, Gulutzan, Peters, Ward, Sutter all have the same basic philosophy.

But in execution, the 90% of the league that doesn't play a Hartley-style system, will still have significant variations from team-to-team, coach-to-coach.

That's my take.
