I'll be more sold if I see the same effort and commitment to detail on Saturday, until then part of my mind is we've seen this before, one good game, and then back to meh.

Yes Gaudreau’s constant turnovers were hurting that line, and causing them to play so much in their own zone. Seems to me there are lots of things that could help improve that, and one of them is to make better choices and get the puck in deep when the other option is one on two.

But just like basketball, some players need to learn to play better off the ball. I hope Sutter helps Gaudreau figure out how to be dangerous when puck is not on his stick. We have seen some of that already with his goal production this year.

And hopefully Monahan can relearn how to be dangerous period.

Saturday will be a good test. Rested MTL team looking for revenge and will likely have a bit of a game plan.

Last night was a game that a decent team just can’t lose.

Maybe a little bit of both so we don't become too predictable.
They did a variation - more of a shorter more angled bump to a guy moving more quickly. But yeah, they still sucked at PP entries last night.

I think Gaudreau dumping the puck in more is a good thing. Part of the issue with that line has been overreliance on him carrying the puck, which makes them too easy to stop. If Gaudreau's skating the puck through the neutral zone 90% of the time, the other two forwards aren't a threat and teams can easily key on him and shut him down. Whereas if he's making a quick pass or a dump-in 90% of the time, all three guys are dangerous and the D has to back off, which should open up more lanes when he does carry the puck. If all five skaters are involved in transition it's a much more resilient way to generate offense, with the downside being it doesn't maximize Gaudreau's point totals when he's at his best.

I actually think that you will see Gaudreau dumping the puck in more than normal, but that he (or someone else on the line) will be carrying the puck in more successfully than usual too.

Gaudreau kept getting caught because the Flames were walking up the ice instead of rushing up the ice. Opposing teams were set already. I think watching last nights' game, you get a bit more sense of how much easier it is to force your will on the game when you are moving quickly and without the benefit of the other team being ready for you all the time.

Gaudreau will return to being a human highlight reel and highly entertaining while playing in this system. He will just get used to dumping the puck in more - and make that decision quicker - as he adjusts to this system. I really do think it is going to help him be more productive.

Gaudreau was dumping more on a line change, which is fine versus going and pretending to forecheck with one hand. Either forecheck to give the linemates more time, or get off the ice and get your replacement on. If you half ass a forecheck on a line change you don't hold up the D at all and you just get trapped deep.

He should get suspended for that embellishment. Imagine if that connected with someones face?

I was going to say in the game Sam was flirting with taking an unnecessary penalty there (like Tkachuk's the other night) but the refs clearly saw Perry was launching himself.

Perry is such a sleazy character. Absolutely can’t stand him. Does his job really well.

Wouldn’t mind him on our bottom six though, to be honest.

It's minor, but 2-3 times I saw Gaudreau go for a hard dump when he could have gained the line fairly easily. I think once he adjusts a bit more to the system he'll find himself making that choice more naturally, cause last night, it just felt like forced dumps.
I agree but the other type of play I was concerned about was a play I saw Huselius try to make on a number of occassions (taking into consideration the different era ie personnel):

Huselius would have the puck deep in the offensive zone in the corner he would turn and be headed toward the blueline and CGY pointmen. He was looking for someone to jumping into open ice - for the d or anyone to be in the middle moving. No one would move, they all stood stationary and Huselius would have to do that blind rim (on backhand) back down the wall.

I think those kind of turnovers Darryl does not like: CGY bringing the puck back up towards the point and turning it over with the puck going towards CGY net.

That, to me, is also playing afraid to make mistakes. I'm not a fan of playing that way. I prefer players to feel confident not worried.

Waiting, are we criticizing Gaudreau's decision to rim it back deep around the wall there? That was the smart, safe play while protecting a lead rather than forcing a low percentage pass that would inevitably get intercepted and result in a high danger chance the other way.

Hrudey even called it out as the kind of play Sutter would like to see
