Here's an interesting one from Pierre LeBrun this morning.
Quote:
David Rittich to the Washington Capitals
The sense I get out of Washington is that the next few weeks will be important to get a better feel for Ilya Samsonov and where he is with his game. In the big picture, I think there’s confidence in thinking he’s their No. 1 guy for years to come. But is that level of consistency going to be there this season? The Caps are all-in and the window to win is tight. So it’s why I think if there’s still any doubt at all closer to April 12 they go out and bring in some insurance in goal. And what better fit than Rittich, who is a pending UFA. The Caps have almost zero cap room so they’d need the Flames to eat at least half of Rittich’s $2.75 million cap hit. And it goes without saying that Rittich would only be available one presumes if the Flames under new coach Darryl Sutter haven’t made a run back into the playoff picture. But all things being equal, I like this fit for Washington.
|
I'd like to see Calgary hang onto Rittich if the season looks like it can be turned around. He's a little wacky but definitely is an asset when his head is screwed on straight.

Wonder if we could get Lapierre for rittich at 50%. McMichael seems to greedy to consider.

That doesn’t make any sense... Vanacek is a stud.

Well, I think LeBrun is seeing it as a pure one-season rental because the playoff window is closing for the vets. This gives them some experience in net if needed.

Makes no sense.
They have Vanecek who’s been alright and Anderson as a goalie who, although is on the verge of retiring, would do a better job than Rittich in the playoffs due to experience.

It’s impossible to know that.

I don’t think we should be expecting prospects drafted in the 1st round being traded for Rittich

I like it. I know a bunch of people attached to Tkachuk and/or JG will not. But that’s a much more PO ready team.

Neither of those trades improve the Flames "now"
Gaudreau > Konecny
Frost is out for the rest of the season by some reports.
Tkachuk + Hanfin >>> Forsberg + Arvidsson.+ Borowiecki
In both trades you have the Flames giving up the best players. How does this improve the Flames "now"? The PHI one I could see an argument for given Gaudreau's contract status, but no way should we be including a 1st - you are also no longer allowed to include conditional picks based on players re-signing in trades.
The Nashville one sees the Flames trading the two best players who are also the youngest players in the trade, that is an awful deal for the Flames.

imagine going from Hanafin to Borowiecki on the back end as a part of a "win now" move, good lord

I think the Flames might be thinking now that Hanifin is their future #1, so I would stop including him in trades... No opinion as to whether they are right, but just saying...

I think the Flames are banking on one of Andersson, Hanafin or Valimaki being a #1, so they don't want to trade any of them.

If we can get Ilya Samsonov for Rittich, we should do it! Seems like the Capitals don't trust him, even though he's got good numbers

Hanifin is an OK top 4 Dman, but he's been in the league for like what...6 or 7 years now and he's still not a top pair guy. He doesn't produce nearly enough offense either.
He's not a number 1 dman and he's probably never going to be a number 1 dman. If Flames brass thinks he is then we've got big problems.
If anything I think the hope of management is that Valimaki will leap frog Hanifin to take over for Gio as the top pairing LHD and Hanifin can at least continue to be a solid 2nd pairing LHD.

I would do the Flyers trade I think even though I think Gaudreau is great. I just really like Konecny.
That Nashville trade is not good though.

Yet he's still only 24 years old and is part of what has been the best pairing in the league this year from an Expected Goals Against and Goals Against per 60 perspective.
He might not be a number 1 but he's a really good #2, and it means your defense is probably elite if he's your number 3.
Also the offense production thing is a bit of red herring - his counting numbers don't look great because he gets no powerplay time at all.
He's second on the team among d-men in 5v5 points since he got to the Flames, and 48th in the entire league among defenseman with 43. For comparison the guy he was traded for in Dougie Hamilton has 52.

Very interesting proposal. I'm not sure how this would shake down, but I do wonder in Sutter's arrival will have impact on the type of players the flames will target.
