Cassette tape memories

I was DJing in the late 80's which was still in the sweet spot for making mixed tapes. I was always happy to make a tape for anyone who asked at a gig, great way for this music nerd to meet girls. I was basically John Cusack in High Fidelity without any game. Even with turntables and mixer, it was a decent amount of work to make a good tape with clean mixes and decent flow for the length of a tape side. Still have some of my vinyl, but the tapes are sadly long gone.

Early 90s I was going to school in Ontario and I would drive back and forth every fall/spring in my pickup with only a tape deck. In 92 my brother-in-law's brother who I didn't really know needed a ride to ON so I figured why not, nice to have company. He wasn't digging my rotation of Metallica, RHCP, ACDC and asked if he could grab some tapes at the next gas stop. He came back with Wilson Phillips, not even kidding. I was then subjected to hours of that effing Hold On song, because I was apparently way to effing nice. Dropped him off in Kapuskasing and he neglected to retrieve his tape. As I pulled out of town, the tape was heaved into the ditch next to highway 11. To this day I can't stand that song.

Still have fond memories of listening to Huey Lewis and the News: Sports on my walkman as a teenager. Greatest innovation of my life (perhaps after the microwave). At the time, I couldn't believe anyone could dislike that music...

Lexus put a cassette deck in cars as late as 2010. I guess they knew their audience.

My 2004 has one too.

I remember in 1991 going on a road trip with a buddy and we each had a cassette suitcase of 30 cassettes each. I think we did listen to everything at least once. quite a few songs form trips like that where you hear the song and it instantly transports you back to that moment in time.

Had my walkman when backpacking in Australia when younger. that was tough to decide which mixtapes to take as I didn't have tons of room to spare.

I got rid of almost all of my cassettes. Kept about a dozen for nostalgia.
also before I threw them out, I took out the paper inserts in all my mix tapes, so I'd always know what I had.

my very first cassette tapes I bought were Masters of Metal Volume 1 & 2.
I still have them.

WOW, what a blast from the past. I had those tapes, had totally forgot about them. The track list came back to me instantly, I played them continuously at one point.

That's fantastic. When I got my first sports car as a teenager it had a tape deck, by which time I had already converted my entire collection to CDs. I happened to have a copy of Top Gun on cassette sitting in my closet still. Me and my cousins drove around for hours listening to that stupid tape.

A long time after, I bought one of my dream sports cars from the US. I made a CD collection for the drive back, and the first song I put on was Danger Zone.

I think my first tape was Michael Jackson's Thriller... Back then it was the cool thing, I swear!

I made up for it by getting Motley Crue's Theater of Pain. -- Shortly after that I remember getting Shout at The Devil. I probably had it for a year or two before I saw the warning on it that it may contain hidden satanic messages. So I gave it to my mom because I didn't want to be brainwashed. I found it a year or two later in the storage room and reclaimed it.

In Jr. High I played the heck out of Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet and then New Jersey.

I was all over the place with my musical tastes until after high school but the one constant was despising country music.

That was probably my 2nd tape.

I recall that they played Heart of Rock and Roll during warmups at Flames games and it pumped this young whipper snapper up.

I still remember buying my first cassette. It was around 1987-88, I was around 6 and my parents gave me a few bucks to buy a present for my older brother. I picked this out because "Got My Mind Set on You" was on heavy rotation on the radio. I also really liked his shirt and glasses.



It was on heavy rotation in our family for many years, and is still one of my favourite albums ever.

My first casette deck was in my 78 Grand Prix SJ. I would have a case filled with compilation tapes of music I recorded from my LP collection.

I would always use the TDK casettes for my recordings. You could buy them in a box 10

Rick Dees was the worst for talking over the intro to the songs. I used to listen to Casey Kasem as well as Rick Dees pretty religiously and would often have my finger ready to go to start recording for my mix tape.

The worst part of the cassette was when they gotten eaten by the player. It was always such a bummer.

The top 10 at 10 was the best time to record, because you could predict when your song was coming pretty accurately.

I still have a Sony RXD7 sound system from my teenage years that I use for my bedroom TV instead of using a sound bar, and that bad boy has the double cassette deck / CD combo. I still pop in a cassette tape once in awhile for nostalgia sake. So many mix tapes from my early teen years lol.
