Like I can't think of another goalie other than Roy who won a cup as a rookie and was just as good, if not better, for their entire career. I mean Vernon went to the finals as a rookie and then went on to win two cups, a playoff MVP and a Jennings -- but his last couple seasons were downright awful.

I was thinking earlier how his emergence and run was similar to Kipper. JB hasn't maintained the same level, but his run was pretty insane...

Dryden did it the same way. Conn Smythe as a pre-rookie in 71, Calder the next year, followed by 5 Vezinas in 6 years (not counting a whole year he took off because he was a lawyer and didn’t like the contract offer) including 4 in a row - and then he retired. And the Habs cup streak ended the next year.
Obviously a shorter career but he had other plans.

I don't understand this contract. His stats are trending towards average, so why does he have so much leverage? His GAA has gone from 1.89 in his cup year to 2.69 current. His Goals saved above average has gone from 13.7 to 0.7 over the same span. Save % dropped from an amazing .927 to .908. He looks like a totally average goalie right now. He has potential to improve, but a major contract like that is crazy in my books.
Outside of the cup run, am I missing something?

A lot of owners seem to be sentimental / loyal to their goalies

A 6 year contract for a 27 year old goalie is pretty good. Goes right through his prime.
It's just that Binnington has only played 133 games and is trending downwards.

I’m pretty sure everyone here would pay Jon gillies $36m no matter how good he currently is if he was the goalie that won us a cup.
Board man gets paid....or in this case ring man gets paid.

gone or injured from the Blues Cup blueline are Pietrangelo, Bouwmeester, Parayko, Edmundson, and Gunnarsson
Then take out forwards Tarasenko, Schwartz, Thomas, Steen, Barbashev and Bozak to injury or retirement.
Binnington has had lights-out, great moments and games this season when he was the only reason they won. He has also had some down moments like against the Sharks when he snapped. Binnington behind a healthy Blues roster wins a lot of games.

This reminds me of Cam Ward. Binnington is good and got hot at the right time. But I don’t see him being elite over the span of that contract, similar to Cam Ward. Cups get ya paid

He won them a Cup. Yeah, ROR got the Conn Smythe, but without Binnington they don't even make it to the dance.
Think about how long their drought was. That kid should be made honorary mayor for life (in addition to his dump truck full of cash).

You wouldn't pay the Goalie that won you the cup 2 years ago 36 million.... This contract has thank you written all over it.

Looking at the team around him, it's changed a fair bit in the last two years. As Canada 02 notes the defence has seen a huge overhaul to the point where Parayko is the only one left from the top 3, and Vince Dunn taking a larger role. That probably as a far greater impact on his stats than anything. His backup this year has pretty shabby numbers too, so it's a good indicator that this team isn't playing the same way Berube had them playing during the 2019 Calendar year. They have shown signs of slipping in their play every since the Calendar moved to 2020. Even up front I do think they don't play with the same commitment to their own end right now as they did during that great run they had.
There's a case to be made that no goalie should ever get a contract that's more than 3 years. But I tend to thing that something that GM's and teams value is a guy who you can put on the ice 55-65 games a season and get pretty consistent play from. The numbers can change based on the how the team in front plays, but if the guy stops enough pucks to help the team win games they are usually satisfied. He's younger than Markstrom and has won more playoff rounds.

Lets just agree that we want to sign Jon Gillies for a dime and that he will bring us a dozen cups.

While I agree that teams sometimes get decent goaltending at a cheap price, it tends to be random and completely unexpected. And often not sustainable.
Name one decent goalie who has been decent for many years who is very cheap.
