Yeah, the goalie might get fluky and may steal a few games, but if you're counting on the goalie doing that, you might as well not put out the 5 guys in front of the goalie and just have the other team do a shooting gallery. I don't buy have an elite goalie. Chicago has gone through their championship days, first with Neimi then with Crawford. Were they elite goalies - I'd say no, but they're average NHL calibre goalies. These goalies did their jobs and so did the Hawk's defense and especially the forwards. If the Flames don't keep running around in their own zones continuously and give so many odd man rushes, maybe they don't need to keep looking for "better" goalies every couple of years.
You might feel confident with Rittich as the starter but I'm not. As a backup? Sure. The Flames needed some stability in net and they got that signing Markstrom. There's no question now who is the guy.

Does that mean they don't have to improve other positions now? Of course not. But again, going out and getting a starting goalie isn't a bad thing.

First line is David Rittich, the second is Karri Ramo.

Rittich is a solid goalie. He’s not a 40+ game starter.

Had Sutter ever acquired a backup as good as Rittich, Kiprusoff wouldn’t have played 70 games SEVEN YEARS IN A GODDAMN ROW.
I totally agree.

Yes. I can.

Yes.

I think Rittich is just fine when he's not injured. He might let in a few weak goals at the beginning of the games but he gets stronger as he plays more.
Agreed. But "just fine" is not good enough to be a NHL starting goalie. I really like Rittich, and I think he is a great option as a backup, or to play in a 1A/1B tandem in a pinch.

Weird ####ing times when you have Oiler and Canuck fans on your board higher on your players/team than you are.

Quick and Kipper both won Vezina trophies playing for Sutter so I really like Markstrom’s chances for living up to his contract and being a top goalie.

Next two full seasons are going to be real good from him I think. Perfect situation to thrive in his prime.

Maybe...but we just saw Markstrom coming off an injury play back to back against the worst team in the division.

Ottawa or Edmonton?

Can be arguments made for either.

Markstrom would not appreciate the disfunction inside the organization or whatever drama is going on inside the locker room..

I can imagine the conversations he and Tanev are having and questioning their decision to leave the Canucks or for that matter to turn down the Oilers...

They left a very tight locker room in Vancouver and an organization on the rise while it looks like the Flames will tear it down this offseason and try again...

And Markstrom will be missing Ian Clarke who helped turn his game around and has been instrumental in Demko's development...

Clark is still unsigned for next year and is thought to be one of the 5 best goalie coaches in the league, for all of the money and term the Flames have invested in Markstrom they may want to spend some more trying to lure Clark their way...

Take care..

Canucks on a three game win streak right?

Timing adds up.

Calgary and Vancouver's cores are pretty similar in age, the Flames aren't doing a full rebuild any time soon.

And Darryl entering the fold changes that completely.

I also think that's a gross exaggeration. Maybe you missed the part where the Canucks left Markstrom out to dry worse than the Flames have when he was there. Vancouver also let him walk after picking the young kid over him even after the great seasons he had there. Yeah, I'm sure he's clamoring to go back.

And you think there's an attractive room culture up in Edmonton with the likes of "it was your fault" Mike Smith, Kevin Lowe and co. hovering, two entitled guys that expect the lion's share of ice time each night, and the incredible leadership of Captain "let's go"?

Vancouver's playoff chances are slim to none...

Since you brought it up, I wonder how many would take Calgary's core over Vancouver's?...

Unless everything we read and hear from Calgary media and radio is bull crap then there will be major changes next season which include the core group...

btw, congrats on beating that health scare you had last year...

I didn't say that he would be upset for being left out to dry, he may be surprised given that most feel Calgary had a stable blue line at the start of the season...

Upset watching the gong show, including players only meetings and a coach being fired?

Yeah, I doubt he nor Tanev would be very impressed with those developments...

Did they consider Calgary a contender when they followed the money out of Vancouver or were they just focused on the money?

Tough to say, but my guess would be that they didn't realize how far from a true contender Calgary is and how close it is to a rebuild or retool...

Take care...

Oh, it is, for the most part.

The guys that talk on the radio are not all that particularly knowledgeable about hockey, nor are they privy to the inside workings of the team

Also, Eric Francis

Thanks appreciate it!

I'm not chest pumping the Flames core, just saying they are a relatively young core and this won't be a rebuild.

That's pretty much it.

You called it a tear down.

You would know better than me but I don't see Monahan and Johnny being Sutter type players...

From what we saw in Vancouver with Markstrom, it wouldn't surprise many if the issues in the locker room were between Tkachuk and Markstrom, can't see Markstom being a fan of some of his antics on the ice....

Mind you, Sutter will get that straightened out real quick...

Take care...

My point is that it's not a group of guys on expiring contracts, or pushing their mid 30s.

If you decide to move a core piece in their mid 20s you get a return that's different than the Senators moving UFA pieces to rebuild.

What a weird thing to guess at. There's literally no reason to believe this is true.

I’m happy he didn’t. That was so fun to watch. He started late, and apparently he always planned on retiring early. I’m glad he wanted to play every game and that they agreed.
