I can't say for sure, but I do come away with the impression he doesn't have the hockey IQ the other Dmen have. Sure he has wheels, but what does he do with that? Nothing from what I've seen.

Well he's 33% in xGF% this year so you don't need to look all that hard to see issues!
In most prevention stats only Mackey (AHL) is behind him.
He hasn't been great. That's clear.
However neither have the other options for the most part, and Kylington hasn't had the sample size of Nesterov to see if he can settle in.
Doesn't take a hate on for Kylington to see issues though.

I'm not thrilled about Ritchie being on a line with Johnny and Mony but I'm keeping an open mind since Sutter has earned the benefit of the doubt and I am also more confident that he will shorten the bench intelligently when leading or trailing.
Ritchie has defintiely exceeded expectations so far as well.
The Bennett Ryan Leivo trio is an interesting one. It's 3 guys who would be playing top 9 roles on a lot of teams, so hopefully this is the right recipe for a team that most of us believed would have a depth advantage this season.

Agreed, and Sutter mentioned depth and rolling four lines yesterday.

Literally bad things don't happen when he's on the ice. Looking at his on ice shooting and save percentage he's just not getting bounces to be under water.
Given how Sutter was talking about shot attempt quantities and suppression I'm guessing he'll tell Backlund to keep doing what he's doing.
|
Stats don't show a player avoiding contact at any cost. Both giving and receiving. Not sure how they account for horrific giveaways at inopportune times either. I also dont really believe in 'not getting the bounces' over an extended time period. To me, he just doesn't look like he's that engaged.
But hopefully stats are correct because if he can get going it only helps the team.
To the eye I don't think anyone one can say he's been playing well.

he's played three games, two of them were against the Leafs. Then one against the Sens we had a lead all game. We haven't played a minute of a game trailing with him in the lineup. I don't think you can draw anything from that sample size. I'm surprised you think otherwise.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the small sample from this season is all that different from how Kylington has fared the previous two years.

Backlund has been pretty "up" and "down" to my eye. He looked quite bad through the first two weeks, but then excellent from the end of January through most of February, and then not as good again the last several games.

I don't think there's much to choose between Bennett and Backlund when it comes to bad penalties. I will say Backlund usually has worse timing when he takes his.

Yeah he had that little run where he was good like you say but he's been out of sorts the rest of the season.

Backlund is not a player that I worry about. Every season he has some ups and downs, and then every year down the stretch he is always one of the best forwards on the team.

He has solid metrics with Prout / Brodie a couple seasons ago, less solid with Stone. In fact Kylington-Prout was a really interesting pairing it was such a shame Peters went away from it after the all star break.
His metrics with Andersson have been kind of meh, but about in line with the team play IIRC.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Sam Bennett says Darryl Sutter coming in feels like a “fresh start” for him.
Says it feels like a reset and he “can start to find a role again”. #Flames
Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
#Flames C/LW Sam Bennett says he has had some good conversations with incoming coach Darryl Sutter: "It's really like a reset."
Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
More from #Flames forward Sam Bennett on Sutter: "We've had some really good conversations just about what he wants from me and what he expects. I'm definitely looking forward to starting fresh here and proving my worth again."

Thing about a sample size?
Small or not if it's bad a player doesn't get to play. I mentioned they haven't given him the rope that Nesterov has had, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had the bad numbers he's had.
When Kylington plays they don't trust him on a third pairing and tend to spot him with more veteran guys.
And yeah as Text said he and Michael Stone are the only sub 50% defenders on the team over the last two years (500 minutes or more total)
16 players have been on the ice with Kylington for 100 or more minutes in the last two plus years, and only four of them are better with him than away from him in shot attempts or expected goals.
I want the kid to turn the corner, but a certain percentage of this is on him.

Thanks Bingo
I love when people talk smack like this and then stats are used to identify they really aren't the issue.
I used to go to allot of games sitting in the same seat and couldn't ever figure out why the guy in front of me hated Gelinas.
When the playoffs in 04 happened I asked midway ....hey buddy....now that Marty has eliminated 2 teams are you gonna stfu ? I mean seriously man.
Backs getting dragged down by his team mates sure doesn't help.
If anyone can get his attention its Darryl....the very man who brought him here I the first place.
