I’m sure others have already said it, so I guess I don’t really need to, but the most telling quote of the day was definitely Tanev’s, “It was fast, up-tempo. I mean it was definitely the best practice we’ve had in a while.”

It’s definitely handy for Sutter that he got the first decent break between games for a while to get some good practices in. I’m sure that Ward was running optionals a lot when they had only one day (or none in quite a few cases) between games.

Damn if it doesn’t feel like, even compared to the other ND teams, the schedule is against the Flames. Good start, interrupted by an unneeded week off after only 3 games, which took away the early momentum. Didn’t play Ottawa until they got over their huge slump in play and goaltending. Huge road trip, compared to other teams. Then they get stuff like playing in Edmonton and then having to play the next night against a team that rested in your own home town for 3 days (and then Edmonton gets that same tired team on the 2nd night BTB).

I’m sure someone will tell me this all evens out. But they’ve been unlucky in how it played out for them.

Good teams make their own luck.

Building on this, whether or not the Flames are ‘good’ decides if, say, Matt Murray is world beater or sieve on any given night?

Kind of trite.

That Irish reporter is hilarious. Do we have a fanbase in Dublin or something.

I lose it everytime his "tick" accent comes out. Is this a local guy or actually a guy from Ireland coming over Zoom?

Why are we getting coverage from Ireland?

Has anyone asked if the Irish reporter is from Ireland yet, or....?

I answered this in the press conference thread but it got kind of buried.

His name is Jim Conlan and his whole thing is to interview as many famous people as he can. He's popped up all over the place. He's located in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland. Does radio there.

Here's his Twitter: https://twitter.com/JimConlanMedia?s=09

He also posts a lot of clips on his Instagram.

Source: I contacted him via Twitter and asked if he was the one on the Sutter intro. press conference. He confirmed it was him.

The Flames are what they are. But their record would have been better, that’s all.

OTOH, if the Flames played Ottawa when they were superbad, maybe had a few more games when they were on a mini-streak before the break, maybe they are, say, .550 right now, and Ward isn’t fired.

Agreed, it would have been great to play Ottawa early before they started to occasionally put decent games together

Silver lining, for sure, though, with that showing getting Ward replaced.

If it got the Flames Sutter, maybe mediocre teams make their own luck too!

Speaking of schedule ... is the season basically on the line in the next four games?

Four home games (two against Montreal, two against Edmonton) I'd assume they need points in every game or go 3-1 at the worst or things will start to get pretty tough..

I agree with those that say the direct opposition effect hinders the "need to go 20-10" proclamations, but only to a point. Things will catch up to them if they don't go on a run and they can't afford to fall further back to Montreal and Edmonton.

and of note ... once they're done the four games they play Toronto, Ottawa and Winnipeg for their few and only play one game against Edmonton and none against Montreal in their next 14.

I would think so, Flames have 30 games remaining. Which not allot of games. If the teams above them play .500 hockey. Math doesn't look great.

Clearly cannot play win a game, lose a game type of a pace.

And with Winnipeg beating Toronto last night I think it comes down almost exclusively to head to head against Montreal and Edmonton (things can change)

It seems more likely that Winnipeg finishes first in the division than they miss the playoffs IMO.
