Yeah with the firings of Julien & Ward and now with the hiring of Sutter I think there is an argument to made that the Flames went from having the worst head coach in the division to the best head coach in the division.
If Julien was still around maybe he’d have an argument but with him gone I think Sutter takes it easily.

Substantial improvement in the teams record in both scenarios. Let's hope he can do it again.

Not quite. In his first season in Calgary Sutter's team had a record of 19-18-8-1. It is still a substantial improvement.
[EDIT] It is also worth noting that in his two other head coaching assignments in which he had full seasons both the Chicago Blackhawks and the SJ Sharks showed substantial improvements. Chicago went from 87 points in 80 games under Keenan in 1991–92 (0.544) to 106 in 84 under Sutter (0.631). SJ went from 62 points in 82 games in 1996–97 (0.378) to 78 in 82 under Sutter in his first season there (0.476).

Sutter has proven to be an excellent NHL coach, and definitely knows how to get the most out of a team in the playoffs. However I have such little faith in this particular group of players that I don't think even Sutter can right this ship.
It will be a combination of:
Sutter over the rest of the season identifying what and who the major problems are with the team and the team culture and who can be shipped out. And then BT (or hopefully someone else) doing his best to identify the players that this team needs that can add to a positive team culture, what players can he bring in that adds some level of accountability to that locker room and to get back into a position to contend.

IMO I don't think there's any argument as Ward was easily the worst head coach in the division and one of the worst in the league. The Flames roster isn't an elite roster but it's a good roster. If Markstrom didn't steal games early in the season we would be talking about a team below Ottawa in the standings. That's how bad of a job he did.

Who knew the guy who put an ice cold goalie (who hadn't played a game in MONTHS) into an elimination game behind a team that was REELING would do a ####ty job? Who I ask?

Yeah I don't think that was a question.
I think the part people would argue is that Sutter is now the best coach in the division.

No one knew this would happen. Lots of people guessed, but that is quite different.

But even if that is all that we get, at least that is moving forward.
Until now, we have been moving backwards. If not falling into a giant sink-hole.

I read quarantine and assumed it was the quarantine for coming into Canada rather than the NHL protocol quarantine (7 days for players, unsure about coaches) plus testing. This makes more senses now.

One thing the Flames have shown under Hartley and Peters is when there is a hard ass pushing the button they have an ability to make a third period comeback. I think about the 2 best years in the rebuild the Hartley lead find a way Flames and the Peters lead 2nd overall team both had many third period comebacks.
Under the soft guys like Ward and Gulutzan it seemed like the team would crumble under adversity.
Sutter definitely should be able to find that comeback magic

Is this fact? Because this seems very anecdotal.
In Hartley’s final season in 15-16, he lead the team to a 25th place finish. There certainly weren’t enough comebacks that season.
In Bill Peters final season right before his departure, his team was struggling mightily to score and sat at an equally disappointing record of 12-12-4. Once again, not enough comebacks in there.
Quite simply put, this is a team of coach killers. They help their coach make the playoffs one season and then falter badly the next season. They’re an easily satisfied bunch without a ton to offer their opponent. If Sutter can fix this core’s problem from year to year, then he truly is an elite coach.

Hopefully part of Sutter fixing the problem is telling Treliving what players need to be shipped out. I don't think some out key guys are the kind of players you win with, at least not if they are key players.

This, plus Ward's team had a few comebacks early this year, didn't they?

There wasn't any goaltending either. To come back you actually need your goalie to keep you in the game.

They were the same two goalies as when the Flames put together that improbable season on the back of numerous comebacks in 2014–15. The same two goalies were also on the team in the last year of Gulutzan's and the first season of Peters's tenure. Goalie performance does not come close to explaining the stark differences between these seasons.
