He has been on the ranch for the last year from what i understood.
I love Sutter's coaching style and he's one of my favorite coaches. It'll be interesting to see which players thrive under him and which can't handle it - because there will definitely be a few who aren't going to be able to handle someone who straight out tells it like it is. Sports in general has taken a real shift towards making sure everyone feels good and is happy, where we all get a medal just for playing. I like the old school approach - if you want it then you better be ready to work for it.
I think there may be a few surprises with who does well and who crumbles under the pressure.
Given where the Flames are in the standings and the level of their play, if nothing else this last 30 games will give Darryl and Tre a very good understanding of which guys they're going to roll with next year. The one thing they know is who their coach will be for the next two years so there won't be this lingering doubt about whether to keep a guy or not based on the coaching. Should allow them to be far more aggressive with moves in the off season.

I am pretty sure that he was always in Canada. That is, at least since the shutdown last year.

I thought his first day was yesterday but the players had the day off so today is the first day he is with the team. I do think he was able to work yesterday with the other coaches.
I think he has been living on his Ranch in Viking, AB so he has been around just needed the 4 days of negative tests to be able to join the team.
Now that we have one of the best coaches in the league, I think the Flames can have a pretty good advantage moving forward since the last 30 especially are like playoff series. Sutter has watched our games and our opponents games in this div and can make the appropriate adjustments to counter the other teams like we haven’t seen in a long time with this team. He out coaches everyone else in this division.
“He’s a very black and white coach,” Stoll said. “He wants you to play a certain way and that’s hard and that’s detailed. And it’s a matchup game with him. The way every coach prepared for a playoff series, that’s how he prepared for every regular-season game, every single preseason game.”
[...]
Lombardi fondly remembers the pre-playoff planning sessions with Sutter.
“Darryl doesn’t open up very much but when he got prepared for the playoffs and we would meet before every round in my garage and have a couple of beers, the way he would break down what we had to do to win, the matchups he wanted, those where our best times I think,” Lombardi said. “Before every series, we’d sit in my garage and have two or three beers and say OK, ‘This is going to be our issue with St. Louis, this guy has to outplay this guy.'”

He has a ranch near Viking, Alberta. He's been in Alberta all this time.
I re-read that a few times until it clicked he was talking about the GM Lombardi, his boss with the Kings (and Sharks), and not Matthew Lombardi, the Handless Horseman that got knocked out of the 04 run by Hatcher.
It's good to have Darryl Sutter as head coach again but I think he has his work cut out for him especially coming in mid season.
There's the style of play, linemates, special teams and minor things like breaking out which the Flames have struggled with. Plus evaluating the opposition, seems a bit all overwhelming to me but that's why they needed someone like Darryl to come in and settle the team down. Good thing they have a couple days off here to practice.
Flames went 1-8 on the PP last game against Ottawa, that game should have been over in the first period when Calgary got 2 early powerplays. Those are the little details I think Sutter will fix.
That's what I remember from our players during the SC run. He gave each guy a simple task. Outplay your guy. And it wasnt about outproducing a guy, it was about being better at your task than the guy you played against was at his. So if you are a Derek Ryan and you are shadowing McDavid in to irrelevance, but scored no points, you did your job.
Everyone had a job that was easy to understand. The only variable was how much effort you put in to it.
