Debated adding Gaudreau to this list, I'd like to see him play along side an actual number one centre, only reason I didn't is the potential of losing him for nothing when his contract is up. The rest I wouldn't hesitate to move if the right deal came along.

Monahan+Lindholm+1st for Eichel+Thompson. Do you think Buffalo would consider it?

Markstrom has been a star for the team this season. No doubting that. I'm a bit concerned that he doesn't seem like he's at the same level as before the injury though. Hopefully he gets back to the super steady play he had to start the season as the team's hero.

I've narrowed it down to Tkachuk and Monahan being the two that are holding the group back the most.
Look at that first period against Ottawa earlier this week when Monahan decided to play mad and use his body out there, the line became dominant and the trickle down effect was massive.
That's what we miss as a team when he's like a dull light bulb bouncing around out there.
Tkachuk killing plays by either being slow, giving the puck away or making moves that he can't finish makes the other top line ineffective and sewers Lindholm's production.
Together those two render the top six useless at even strength with their uninspired and defeated looking play.
They're also the key to those two lines looking competitive and rejuvenated.
They are who I give special attention to if I'm Sutter. Find out what makes them tick.

fair enough but its two games B2B and really he stopped 4 breakaways...got scored on with an own goal, a 2 on 0, and a scramble.
He might be a little rusty but of all things to be worried about that isn't one of them IMO

Unfortunately no, Monahan is that big of non factor on most nights.

I suppose the bright side of the Flames playing this way is that it severs a lot of the sentimental attachment to the current roster, making it easier to make clear-eyed and wholesale changes to the makeup of the team.
The only guy I'd really be sad to see go is Johnny, who is (IMO) the most entertaining Flames player since Theo. As frustrating as he can be some games, he's still a wizard with a skill set we're not likely to see again until the Flames finally draft in the top 3.
Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, the Flames should make whatever moves they need to make to improve this team going forward and to rebuild its identity. As much as I think Sutter will improve the team's play, I don't believe the current roster is good enough and - based on how they've played of late - I don't think the players believe it either. With the extra bit of chaos caused by Covid and the junior leagues, as well as the addition of Seattle, it may prove to be a good season to restructure.
Hopefully it's an active off-season and the Flames are able to bring in some new, young, and eager talent.

I'm not that guy saying Monahan is better but Eichel has two goals this season...he hasn't been much of a factor either

And he is still miles better than anything we have upfront. I don't care about this season either, they have more work to do in the offseason to change the direction of the team, even if Eichel came on board prior to the trade deadline.

I find it hard to believe there’s been 5 teams worse than us over that stretch.

Taking stats from a 20 game stretch with the Flames playing terrible Vs. Hiller's best season with the Flames, one of the very few seasons in the last 30 years they actually played well. Maybe check Hiller's stats when the Flames fell back to earth the next season.
|
Actually, I take back my agreement (in regards to Markstrom being slightly overrated this year).
90.7% is not bad this year, it's exactly league average.
And it's above average for the Canadian division.
Do I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Markstrom the runaway MVP?
Maybe. 90.7% won't get you anywhere near Vezina conversations, regardless of the quality of defense.
But I guess no one else has really been an enticing "MVP" candidate on the Flames.

The flames would be making an incredible mistake if they sign tkachuk long term at 9+Mil per year.
He is slow and will continue to get slower.
That paired with him slumping is a terrible combo and one that will only happen more frequently as he gets closer to 30

I have a feeling this was the last game for Huska as a head coach of the Flames.

He's getting paid $9M next season regardless. If he's still playing like he has been this season, would that make him worse value than Lucic?

Tkachuk can play much better...hopefully he does well with Darryl. He does have 21 points in 26 games though.

The management of Markstrom has been terrible all season long. The guy has a bit of injury history, so Ward plays him till he's broken. He was all world and then went out and did something completely out of character and ran into Pearson. You do stupid things when you are tired.
That hit caused some kind of injury and he got lit up the next game then is injured.
Then, you finally get him back into the saddle and first game back he goes up against McDavid and faces 30 shots. You'd think maybe you might ease him into it a bit given that he's just come off an injury. Nope, play him the next night. You've got Rittich who has been playing regularly already.
I just don't understand the goaltending decisions this year. It's like, play the goalies till they break.
Markstrom can be all world, but he doesn't have the endurance of a Martin Brodeur. He needs rest and maintenance. They should be managing his workload a lot better.
