Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Listening to Fourth Period radio on the NHL Network this morning I got mad at Dennis Bernstein who suggested a hardass old school coach wouldn't work now a day especially with Gaudreau. Hold on a second. The same Gaudreau who excelled under old school coaches like Hartley and Peters? History suggests he'll thrive under Sutter. Also it's not like Johnny is a 19 year old rookie. He's had coaches like this before possibly including his Dad lol.

It's just such a lazy and uninformed take. It's embarrassingly bad.

IMO he’ll do fine. And if he doesn’t, we know something else about how far he’s willing to push to win.

See, that's your problem right there. Radio guys, generally speaking, are not paid to have informed opinions. They're paid to have enough opinions to fill up hours of airtime. This often means they need to bloviate about things they know very little about.

Bernstein should know better. He covers the Kings and the pacific division almost exclusively and has done so for years. Legit pissed me off.
Also got the impression he just didn't like Sutter and given his connection to some Kings players that could very well cloud his opinion.

Last 10 Cup winners:
Bolts
Blues
Caps
Pens
Pens
Hawks
Kings
Hawks
Kings
Bruins
Other than the Bolts, are any of these teams flagbearers for 'the new NHL?'

True
Johnny actually busts his ass back checking a good amount of time
If anything, Sutter won’t put up with guys without the puck not paying attention, and there will be less Johnny skating in to guys 1 on 3

I think he doesn’t backcheck nearly I often enough, but his main defensive problem is when the other team is established din the zone. His position isn’t good and he doesn’t have a good stick. He flies the zone, too but IMO that’s his job.

Yeah, I agree his in zone work hasn’t dazzled but it’s also kind of tough to gauge because the Flames D has been so frustratingly passive.

I actually can't wait for all of the hot takes calling Sutter a dinosaur. It's just so lazy and uninformed.
Everyone called him a dinosaur when he was hired by LA. If they don't learn their lesson after 2 cups, they'll never learn.

DB seems like a good guy and all, but his hockey takes are all so bad.

A cup not 7 years ago.
We're not talking different eras whatsoever.
Also an "old school" team won it before the Lightning.
I don't understand the rationale behind bashing any coach that has won multiple championships. Doesn't even compute for me.

The Irish guy who asked questions was Jim Conlan. He does radio in Clare in the west of Ireland and his thing is he basically interviews anyone he can. He has a massive list of people he's interviewed. I asked him via Twitter to confirm it was him.
Here's his Twitter:

Here's an article with some info. from after he made some news by popping up in an interview with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola: https://www.clareecho.ie/clare-repor...pep-guardiola/

Anyone else feel like this could be the revitalization that Bennett has needed? I think he could really flourish under Sutter. Not trading him could end up being a huge addition to the team imo.

Also, Jerry York, Gaudreau's college coach is 75 years old. York coached his first NCAA game the same year that Jaromir Jagr was born. Next season will be York's 50th consecutive season as an NCAA head coach.
Doesn't get much more old-school than that.
Gaudreau was a Hobey Baker finalist in 2 of his 3 seasons at Boston College, so I'd say he thrived playing under York.

Heard this for 6 years now, 5 coaches have disagreed with you, hopefully Sam listened to Treliving at the press conference and heard the part about putting in an effort.

Darryl is only 62. Looks older. During the cup run he was 45. Crazy.
