Skating is usually worked on in the offseason as it requires lengthy recovery times that you simply can't do during the season.

Pretty tough on the young guys to devote their fun off season to a grinding activity like that. But maybe Sutter will convince them, if he thinks it’s a need.

If he wins 2 cups while in Calgary (totally reasonable expectation!!) he jumps into a tie for 4th most successful coach in NHL history. Winning 3 cups over his contract pushes him into a tie for 3rd overall (wouldn't that be nice?). Fat chance of passing Bowman (9 cups), and Toe Blake (8), ever.
Another fun fact: the only coaches to win cups with different franchises are:

Dick Irvin (Leafs x1, Habs x3)
Scotty Bowman (Habs x5, Pens x1, Red Wings x3)

Would love to see Darrly join that list, but I think Laviolette, Quenneville, and Trotz have better odds at the moment (pretty sure Torts is the only other currently eligible)

I like to think the 89 Cup was on Badger Bob’s shoulders and he has two teams with cups in my mind.

We all joked growing up that you can’t teach skating. But you can, just nobody does.

Yes, times have changed. They teach skating to kids now at a level that was nowhere on the radar when we grew up. Tons of edge work drills every practice. So many kids have great ‘Crosbys’ at a young age, and it’s just another move around the pylons. I never practiced it as a kid.

It’s really amazing that we’ve gone from a middle-of-the-pack basement dweller to potential cup contender overnight. Normally coaches come in and check their comments to the media so as not to set unrealistic expectations. Don’t think for a second that the unfinished business line and his comments about this group having what it takes was an accident from Darryl.

Players have to play along first. This will be a massive test for this team.

How easy is it to determine or get a sense of a player's fast-twitch muscles? Is it something that could be determined at the combine? It would be great tool to be able to forecast a player's potential to increase their speed.

Posters keep bringing up players who were able to significantly increase their skating speed - how do we know whether they were able to because they put effort into it or that they put effort into AND they had fast-twitch muscles?

There are different parts to improving

A large portion of the training to target and develop fast and slow twitch muscles is done in the gym with targeted exercises

Then there is technique which only can be developed and practiced on ice

Nothing is an accident with Sutter. (Though a few of his trades were train wrecks)

TBF to textcritic, IIRC most of his harsh condemnations come to posts that are simply inane, not simple factoid brain-farts.

Of course, when his brain read Peter Laviolette? he probably should have asked-jeeves instead of posting here.
