Says he believes that the only other guy they were considering before deciding full-time on Ward last summer/fall was....Sutter.
Suggests they have at least been thinking about him for 6 months.
Yup, the claim that ownership went about this without Treliving is BS. They were involved for sure - Treliving is spending their money on paying unemployed Ward and paying Sutter. Hell, they may have even discussed it with Treliving before. But this is his decision. And more evidence he does address his own mistakes, just like the Lucic deal.

I suspect ownership was thinking of Sutter and Brad was thinking of Ward. But that is just my take, they is an all-encompassing word that would include many people in the organization.

The other point brought up by Warrener is that when BT, Conroy, Maloney, Pascall and company were sitting around an office and having these conversations last year, don't think that at minimum Conroy wasn't throwing Darryl's name around and probably pretty liberally.
So yeah, when you step back and start adding it all up, Sutter has been on the BT radar for quite a while....maybe just to a lesser extent until the last couple weeks.
That's right, Brad. Tell them it was your idea to hire Sutter.
Well the process pretty clearly was hire two coaches who had never made the playoffs in their combined 6 years as a head coach before joining the Flames and a rookie head coach and then hire the Stanley Cup champion coach who had made the playoffs 14 times, went to three Stanley Cup finals and won two Stanley Cup championships.
Every player on the flames will recognize that between Sutter's 3-year term and his history with the club that he holds much more clout than any of the players. I can't imagine that any player felt the same about Ward who was basically a lame duck coach at this point. I look forward to seeing a far more motivated and committed group. Anyone who can't raise their game and intensity level will likely find work elsewhere in the coming months or off-season. And, of course, there's the simple fact that he's an elite coach with a track record of real NHL success.
Can you imagine Sutter's reaction to the Keystone Cops warmup from the other night? I think the "give a damn" level from the players is about to go way, way up.
Does Tre have 3 years left as well? I’d guess that he gets 2 more years, and if it doesn’t work out we go with a new GM while still having one year with Sutter’s contract. I really just hope it works out though and Tre can stay longer term. Gotta put up some results now though, and this is still a flawed roster.
I actually like that Darryl has been away from coaching for a 3 years. He’s got a good hockey mind and he’s no doubt been watching the game change a bit. I’m not worried he’s stuck in smash mouth hockey.
I remember right when he came in mid season he said the Flames needed to be bigger (true) but he also wanted faster, which was also true. So he’s not against speed, which I think is the name of the game in 2021. In fact, he brought in 5’11” Langcow and 6’1” but skinny Huselius as his first offseason moves after the 04 run. Of course, he did bring in McCarty too.
Friedman made it sound like they almost hired Sutter in the offseason and it was always him or Ward. Organization feels comfortable with Darryl so he was the only other option. To me that is basically the owners telling Treliving that he can have one more guy (Ward) but if he fails we are bringing in the guy we trust and who is proven.
I am so happy this move was made and I said it a few days ago comparing this flames team to the 2012 Kings. Flames aren’t the biggest bangers and crashes but they have the elite goalie and if this team works hard they can play with anyone.
I don’t think this is a bad team. I think this is a good team playing poorly. I am very excited to see this team playing for a guy who has won 2 cups in the last decade.
