Who knows, but to me this starts a Treliving countdown. I can’t see this as his hire. The over under is this free agent season. I would bet under right now.

I think people are assuming this because Treliving has passed over Sutter twice now when he was available amid a coaching change. Also, some have this silly notion that Treliving would not hire an experienced coach because he secretly feared a hostile takeover from within, or some such nonsense.
I think it is likely that this was a decision made in close consultation with ownership, but I don't believe for a second that Sutter was hired by anyone but Treliving.

Conroy interview on Global: https://globalnews.ca/news/7678755/c...-sutter-coach/
EDIT: Actually looks like it's an old interview, but still some insight from the AGM about playing for Sutter.

No, I don't know there is no proof. That's why I was asking. I thought I missed something, hence why I was asking.

This is pure speculation but I do wonder if this seed was planted much earlier than we’d think.
There have been rumors that Sutter wanted to be coach here again going back to when Peters was hired. And I’ve heard rumblings that at that time ownership would have preferred Sutter too.
Then there have also been some rumblings going back to Wards official announcement that “Tre didn’t get the chance to hire the guy he wanted this offseason”
I do wonder if it’s possible that this offseason ownership told Tre that he had two options: Make Ward the full time coach or hire Sutter.
Quite possible that at the time Treliving said Ward but now with how the seasons gone ownership may have stepped in and forced the move to Sutter.
Alternatively you’d have to think that the Assistant GM to Treliving was probably a big supporter of them potentially hiring Sutter as coach too...

Darryl Sutter behind the bench, and an elite goalie between the pipes...
Can history repeat itself? (and right it's wrong?)

I'm hoping this starts a long-time, successful relationship between Darryl Sutter, the coach - and Brad Treliving, the General Manager.

Definitely think BTs hand was forced. I'm completely guessing here but I think after 2 lopsided loses to the Sens and 2 days between games, a few meetings took place between ownership and management. Ownership probably brought up the idea of hiring Sutter and thought it made sense to bring him in despite the contract situation with Ward. BT knew his job was on the line and agreed with ownership.

Pat says he thinks Sutter still might have to go through 7 days of quarantine, or at least some form of Covid protocol.
Does anyone know anything about this?

optimistically, I'm reminded of the St Louis Blues from about two years ago. They added some big pieces in the off season, very high expectation, then they started the season like crap. Blues fans wanted Yeo fired, Armstrong fired, trade everyone not named Ryan O'Reilly. Then they hired a hard-ass coach named Berube, got great goaltending from Billington and turned everything around

sounds like Darryl is already with the team if he is meeting the press with Treliving. I guess that is a bit of an assumption now days, could be on separate zooms. Will be interesting to hear how this unfolded. I think like some have mentioned, this decision could have been made a week(s) ago and just had to wait out any quarantine.

So a few things. And we will start with those related to a key party here
- owners have fired a coach when Sutter was GM
- workplace politics are a real thing, and not all coaches have successful resumes including the GM position. Why, Sutter hired Feaster as AGM and he ended up taking his job
No need to be naive nor presumptive, but please. Think about what you are saying in that context
Is it really implausible that ownership essentially gave Tre two options, one very obvious?

Darryl Sutter doesn't need quarantine. Covid looks him in the eye with mortal fear.

If Sutter can get Monahan working as a proper 1st center then we are in business.
But even his 2011 Kings had Koptiar and Carter.
This is a really good start, but I still think there's work to be done.
