I really thought they’d ride out this season and evaluate everything in the off-season. This is a bold move and a vote of confidence in the players. It will be fascinating to see how they respond.

Unless Sutter said “I don’t know - I’ll decide tonight” and when they won he decided he’d do it.

Chess not checkers, but that's never in the wheelhouse of the radio crew.

Guaranteed Sutter was contacted late last week or early this week and takes a while to get all the logistics sorted.

It needed to be done. I don't doubt that Ward isn't a good person but he's just not an NHL Head Coach. I'm a little shocked seeing it happen after a win but I guess they can't afford to wait any longer.

In my opinion Sutter is not perfect coach for this guys, but he is much much better than Ward. I hope it works well. Bring Iginla as assistant while we are in this.

Typical of the Flames to do this after a big win. It's a band-aid solution, they might win a few in a row but the real issue of not enough talent will still rear its ugly head.

Alright. Coach #5 for this core and here it is: an experienced coach with a history of winning. Time to put up or shut up.

Really feel for Ward. I liked the guy as a human being but it was clear it wasn’t working out.

Absolutely stunned it happened tonight though.

You expected Darryl to wait around for a loss?

Let the beatings commence. I have seen few teams that are more in need of numerous ass kickings than this one.
A decision like this isn't made in an hour.

It is made over the course of days. And hiring Darryl would have required some negotiations. I would imagine the decision to remove Ward was made after last game, but there were pending details before this announcement.

He will hold guys to task, and not mince words. My guess is it helps that is he's cheap, close by and it's likely until the end of the season and reevaluated. And I guess the other coaches stay.

Edit, or not. 3 year deal.
