Some high picks just don't pan out. It happens every single year. These kids are 18 years old, it's impossible to look into a crystal ball to see what they look like when they've developed years down the road.
I don't blame the Flames at all for that pick. Just sucks it didn't work out.

Especially when they’d looked stupid in 2012 for going off the board.
I’m actually quite impressed at what scouts do based on a limited amount of info. And sometimes you never know. Daigle looked like a can’t miss guy.

Why do you seem to think that's what they did? It's a complete fabrication.

When Feaster came in the media ate it up, because he was a jovial blabbermouth.
The Janko pick at that spot isn’t horrific given the choices at the level. It’s the fact they traded down and gave up Hertl, Teravainen, Wilson, Ceci, and Vasilevsky.
Mind you, I guess we’ll see about Treliving moving down to get Zary.

It's so easy to look back with 20/20 vision now. But I (along with so many of the faithful here) was super happy with Bennett and Monahan.
It's the fun of the rebuild, drafting guys and seeing how they turn out.
Bennett is a head scratcher, because there is a solid NHLer in there somewhere.
Money is a home run, IMO you have to be blind not to see that.

If I recall correctly, the two alternatives to Bennett most frequently floated around leading up to that draft were Nick Ritchie and Valeri Nichuskin.
We would not have been much better off with either.
Flames pretty much went the consensus route at the time and it just didn't work out.
I remember Loubo suggesting they take a look at Horvat. Smart guy. Would've been a great pick and he would be the 2C at this point in all likelihood.

It's scary to trust an interim guy with the fire sale. Feaster was an odd choice given the fire sale was a once in a generation event to liquidate legends of this hockey club.
Everyone in the NHL knew Feaster was a lame duck, and that's probably why the returns were less than ideal.
It's also why if there is a an interim GM after Tre I'd like some guardrails placed around what he can do with full autonomy. The core should be off limits until we get our next full time 5-10 year GM.
Interim guy should be for balance of the season only. Let Connie get some exp before he is let go. I know I get some heat for suggesting him as the interim guy, but it's good fan service (we love him) and it helps him buff his resume if he will not be here in 21/22.
Also, there has to be a happy medium between Tre's process bull#### and Feaster's open Kimono.

They were reliefs after years of Jankowski, Pelech, Chucko missing out on Tarasenko, seeing Erixon fly away, etc.

For a long time I've felt that Loubo is the kind of guy whose talents are wasted in the broadcast booth.
He is sitting right there in front of you Flames! LOL he is already sort of on your payroll.

No fiasco? We were set to pick at the 14th spot. We traded down to go totally off the board. We could have had Wilson Hertl or Teravainen, who are all very good impactful players. Heck any player between 14 and our pick at 21 were way better.
Or am I missing some green text?

I mean yeah there was a lot of tantalizing traits, but it should be an amateur scouts’ job to see what’s translatable to the NHL and what’s not. Maybe another organization would’ve bypassed Bennett and looked like geniuses. Heck, Craig Button I think had Virtanen outside the 1st round in his rankings and Virtanen was widely considered the consensus #6. Find the best scouts and make the right calls is what I’m saying.
For the record, I haven’t even hated the job Tod Button and co have done. They just haven’t been afforded a lot of picks to make hay. I would’ve loved to have seen what they would’ve done with the 2016 second that went to St Louis, maybe Alex Debrincat? That’s certainly right in their wheelhouse. Would’ve loved to see what the Dougie and Hamonic picks would’ve been had they kept those. The amateur scouts have done great work for what they’ve done, it’s those damn pro scouts that need to get their #### together.

Monahan at 6OA is everything you could hope for outside of a top 3 pick. As was Tkachuk. Both players with an NHL floor.
You just wish they got someone elite with that highest ever 4th pick.
If Bennett was a Brayden Point level center like we sort of expected at the time, the team would be in quite good shape currently.
No team should EVER be given as many swings at top players in a short period as edmonton did. They should've been cut off from any lottery odds after the second one.

Yeah, it’s not like trading down incrementally to get Zary, when I think Treliving had 3 or 4 guys who were all on the board in that region and all satisfactory. Janko was ranked in the 40s. Previously ranked in the 70s.

Back in 2014, the majority of people on this Message board were hoping that Sam Bennett would be the guy who Calgary would get. Had the Flames picked Ehlers, or fell back, the sentiment at the time would have been one of disbelief. There used to be a lot of desire for a top 5 pick, and often the number 4 pick can turn out to be a bit of a dud. Inside the top 3 normally makes a huge difference, but in any draft the best player might go 140 spots in...you never really know. Always easy 7 years later to say idiot scouts should have taken player x or player y with pick z. Boston is usually quite good at drafting...imagine what they'd be if they take Chabot, Connor, and Barzal in a row. Maybe they should stop cheaping out on scouting too?

They claimed others were seeking Janko in round one. Has any other team ever confirmed this?
