The Rangers aren’t trading Zib just because he’s had a bad start (rumoured to be COVID recovery).

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. As much as i've enjoyed Gaudreau playing for the Flames, a deal that brings in a skilled, big RW that plays with snarl and leadership would be welcomed. We could actually start building towards a team identity that is difficult to play against.
I'm tired of having the softest top 6 in the league. Bringing in a player (that is rumoured to be available) of Forsberg's calibre would be a welcomed addition. We may down ground in total skill, but he makes up for it in his defensive game, board battles, leadership, and playoff performance. It's not like he's an offensive slouch either.

I didn't say they would trade him because of his bad start, but I think his bad start could potentially raise interest in a Monahan for Zibanejad swap. The value isn't that far off. Just dreaming up scenarios.

I think Johnny for Forsberg would be a pretty decent change of scenery swap. Forsberg carries the bag with basically no help in a defensive system and plays a good 2 way game. His offensive production isnt that far off either.
I suspect he would be pretty close to the same production as Johnny here but better defensively. He is a very good playmaker as well. I could see it being an option to get a more creative offence for Poile. For us it might help us bleed a few less goals. It could work for both teams.
We would still need to move Monahan though to move the needle. Like others have said id be willing to move Chucky to for someone with more footspeed or in an Eichel package. I would not be gutting the whole team for Eichel though. He cant will a team to victory like McDavid.

What are the rules again with retaining salary? Skinner can be traded with 50% retained. But can his salary be retained a second time? So he is traded to the Flames as part of an Eichel package with 50% retained by Buffalo. Can Calgary flip him to another team at 50% retained again? So Buff pays $4.5, Calgary pays $2.25 and team 'X' pays $2.25?
EDIT: It looks like it can be retained a second time as per CapFriendly
Teams cannot retain an aggregate amount of more than 15 percent of the Salary Cap Upper Limit.
Players’ contracts are limited to 2 retained salary transactions per contract.

Crazy how Skinner's production has dropped off a cliff.
He's only 28.
Got his big money contract and doesn't give a #### anymore?
Injuries caught up with him?
If they'd retain 50% of his cap hit it'd be almost worth the gamble if it meant getting a top 5-10 #1C in the NHL like Eichel.

He has had multiple concussions that lead to missed time. That could be part of the problem, and lead to a player taking less chances physically. But his shooting percentage is also unsustainably high in his high goal scoring seasons.

To Calgary: Tim Stutzle, Josh Norris
To Buffalo: Monahan, Zary, 1st, 4th, Geoff Ward
To Calgary: Eichel
To: Anywhere but here
Flames: Nordstom, Simon
Stutzle- Eichel - Mangiapane
Forsberg - Backlund - Lindholm
Lucic - Norris - Dube / Connolly
Leivo - Ryan - Connolly
Next Season
Pelletier/ Forsberg- Eichel - Mangiapane
Pelletier/ Forsberg - Stutzle - Lindholm

More defensively responsible. Set for C down the middle. Second line would suffocate teams and can score.

I used to be on the 'trade Hanifin to fix the forwards' bus, but I think we have now seen that LD isn't the position of strength/surplus that we hoped it was.
Valimaki isn't reliable yet, and Gio isn't terribly reliable anymore.
Hanifin leads the team in EV TOI, and his brain lapses seem to be less and less frequent.
Then again, we do have Markstrom now, and LD's can be easier to come by than RD's, but I still of the mind that we need to actually change up the forward core, not simply add to it.

Plus I just think that team would have more energy and be more fun to watch. So many Flames games are just outright boring because nobody seems to have enough give a shyte to do anything.

I dunno I don't think Hanifin's been terrible, but he also isn't doing enough offensively or defensively to justify his current contract. Granted I'm sure we paid some for potential there, but if it's not going to pan out, trade him before other GM's realize it too.

It’s clear that if Calgary can get younger, better and cheaper, it will be a good thing.

Giordano with retained to Toronto to play with Brodie just makes to much sense not to happen?
I imagine with retained you get their first and a roster player (forward).
Then you protect Hanifin, Andersson, and Taniv

Our 1st is trending to be really high, so maybe we just keep it and get our own Eichel/Stutzle? (assuming we can get accurate information from this draft)

You’re protecting them anyway, but Gio to Toronto makes sense (and should have happened off season in hindsight).

Im just worried we wait 7 yrs for another Bennett or Monahan not to mention other holes open up as guys get older that are already here. I feel like Ottawa even with the worst owner in the league is a very very good drafting team. I like their judgement in that area. Eichel is already a top C. Takes a little bit of the magic beans out the equation and keeps us competitive now and in the future. It puts us up there with McDavid/ Drai , Matthews / Taveres, Scheifele/ Dubois for having a solid 1 -2 punch.

Last years draft would've been a great time to trade for picks.
This years draft sounds like it may be more comparable with the 2013 draft (late 1st rounders like Emile Poirier and Morgan Klimchuk)

From Friedman’s 31 thoughts.
3. Kekalainen did confirm what has been rumoured, that the Blue Jackets are looking at centres. They’ve got some talented young players who need time to grow into that position, but immediate help is needed, too.
Monahan and Backlund are centers. Im sure those names popped up in Dubois talks. What do they have to offer?

Kiril Marchenko
Emil Bemstrom
Ryan McInnis (worth it for name only)
Danil Tarasov
Those are just prospects I like.
