Fragile and uninterested hockey team. Not sure why they are so fragile but its been an ongoing theme. The core group is expired. Not sure we can fix anything in a pandemic world.

Why the flying eff would someone want to cheer for American Vancouver?
You would pretty much be just a Canucks fan.

We are 1 step away from opening a "Flames are no good" thread.
Will the Flames make any, ANY, changes before that happens?

When Seattle is a regular expansion team and not a Vegas I think some people will change their tune

my browser is having troubles but:
Hackey "I'd rather see them make a coaching change than a trade. This is a terrible time to get value in a trade and I don't think a trade is the answer. I don't think any coach on Earth turns them into a contender but it's the easiest move with the highest upside."
At this point something needs to be done to shake things up. I've never believed anything good comes from "blowing it up" but the lack of kickback and effort from the core players is worrisome and given their level of effort I would argue some are checking out. This isn't a good environment to build upon.
The easy fruit at this point is to fire Ward. Firing Trevling in the middle of the season doesn't have much upside because it doesn't fix any of the glaring issues. Having a new GM doesn't actually help us get better trade offers and doesn't make sense until the off-season in my opinion.
Blowing it up and trading away players for assets is not a good strategy in my opinion. This is basically equivalent of selling during a dip. If they rebuild or even retool getting rid of one big name could be good enough to significantly change things though. Is there any name on this team who isn't untouchable at this point?
I do hope they do something because from my point of view some of the players are checking out. I do still believe this is a good team and a couple tweaks could save the immediate future. At this point why not roll the dice and make a fair hockey trade.
TDLR: Do something. Fire Ward because it's a big change with the smallest risk but could still have significant upside. It might not make a difference but gives you a chance to evaluate everyone before real big changes and can signal that the current group is not good enough.

Feels like there has been something seriously wrong with this core for a while now. The mental fragility and lack of 60 minute efforts has spanned multiple years and coaches. Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, and Backlund are all individually great players but really seem to lack leadership. While I don't think a full rebuild is the way to go, a serious retool where maybe the team needs to look at making Tkachuk the leader of this team.
Yes, Tkachuk is having an off year, but he generally has been the most engaged and passionate player on team. I think giving him the captaincy would force some more maturity and drive the team in a new direction. Start by building around him, Lindholm, Dube, Magiapane, Andersson, Hanifin, Valimaki, and Markstrom. Supplement that with what trading Gaudreau, Monahan and Backland can bring in, hopefully good young players and A level prospects. I don't know what you do with Gio.

I’m so tired of the BS spewed by Treliving, Ward and the players during interviews that I can’t bear to listen to them anymore. It’s like when you see Trudeau on tv you immediately turn the channel. They need to stop putting lipstick on the pig. The pig is dead ! It’s been dead for years lol!

Sadly because of the pandemic, making changes now that will get good value in return is going to be difficult. The only way to make a big impact is to can Ward.
But I can't see Treliving doing that because he's run through so many coaches already.
The team is getting to a point where the organization needs to begin the transition away from Treliving before he makes some stupid trade to try and save his job.

Yeah, Flames should fire Tre to signal a new regime. Put Malony in as interim. Keep Ward until end of the season. Get your high pick. Move players if possible but like many have said, big changes unlikely before drafts.
Hopefully this makes it so that the core fits easily in the protected list. And we don’t risk losing good players for nothing.

If the Flames are going to be tanking this season, I would like to see them getting a high pick, exposing Gio in the draft and hoping he's taken, making just one or two changes to the forwards core group, adding a strong RW, and bringing in a new coach with a new team captain to start next season. The team has some very good pieces, but needs better leadership on the ice and from the bench.

They need to make a coaching change immediately, and if Tre can't do that, he has to go...immediately. A new coach could breath enough life into this group to perhaps salvage the season, get into the playoffs, and with Markstrom in net..who knows. Yes, the players have a lot to be held to account for, but you aren't going to trade an entire core this season. Coaching change makes the most sense....but they have to get a proven veteran coach. Enough already. Take the decision away from Treliving if you have to.

At this point I think this team is so pathetically sodden that it couldnt be blown up if we wanted to.

Ryan always struck me as one of those hard working, earn his place on the team by taking care of the details sort of players. Makes sense that he doesn't fit with the team anymore.

Time for the clean slate protocol? I'm not saying give everyone away for nothing, but haven't we been mediocre for enough years already?
The hard part is getting the right person steering the ship. Otherwise we end up right back where we are now. I have no idea who the right guy is but it seems obvious we need someone to come in and put his own stamp on this mess. Hopefully more like Yzerman did in TB as opposed to Chiapet in Edmonchuck.
