I was mostly jealous of my brother, because as kids we were told life isn't fair and to not compare ourselves to other families that may be better off but they would always try to do their best for us(which they absolutely did). That talk stuck with me, and it's been great through life. Saves the thoughts of keeping up with the Joneses. If you have a kid, give them that talk. Anyway, it left that opening that I could be jealous of my brother.

He always got new skis, and when he grew out of them I got the beaten up broken edged remnants of petex filled butter sticks. One year he didn't grow out of them, but lucky me, my dad had found a perfectly serviceable pair of Yamaha skis at the dump, so those were mine. My first new pair of skis were when I was 16 and could buy them myself.

/still bitter

Haha.... I was totally like that, I was lucky to have 3 or 4 friends throughout my entire childhood. So I just spent the bulk of my childhood just making due, and doing things on my own.

In fairness, and in retrospect, I was a pretty crappy kid, and didn't really deserve any friends to be completely honest.

As an adult I massively have grown to appreciate it. I love the fact that I was conditioned to not need to constantly be surrounded by people all the time, and talking about what the best type of siding is, or if Lady Gaga lip synced during the Super Bowl. I honestly could not care less.

It drives my partner a bit nuts as she's a social butterfly, but when everyone else is having these vapid conversations, I'll usually be found making the food, or just sitting quietly on the sideline counting the minutes until everyone leaves. Yeah, I'm the actual "You must be fun at a party!" guy.

you're lucky. for me, having a kid made it worse.
I didn't get certain things as a kid and then self shame for not being able to buy the cool stuff for mine.

I did get a new lego set every christmas, so that was really cool

I was envious of my friends who's parents let them watch whatever cartoons they wanted. My parents were ok with me watching Robotech, GI Joe and Transformers, but that's about it. Any other cartoons were no good, and if they were on, I wasn't allowed to watch them. They really had some problems with He-Man and She-Ra.

He's one of the most durable transformers because he's got some metal and he can be stored as a block shape.
But I did lose my Ravage, which sucks because he was awesome and looked bad-ass.

trust me, I can see in my head right now the picture of my dad standing next to a cylon.

seriously. they did that.

on a less serious note, I was jealous of the guy I knew who had an intellivision game system.
I was so happy when I got to play the baseball game.
God, I can't imagine what kind of adult would even want to go to Disney Land without their kids? I've been with my kids and that is what made it fun. Why the hell would an adult want to go with other adults? The only place we have gone without our kids is Vegas.

I was jealous of the kids that were "sponsored"!! That was the cool popular kid/teen thing.

Look at buddy on the skateboard...He is sponsored. What a stud!!!

Look at cool dude on the BMX... He is sponsored you say!!! Wow, so cool.

I wanted to be sponsored so bad, but I was a poser. So jealous of those guys, all the girls crushed on them.

Generally it was clothing.

I mean I was jealous that they didn't have to wear their sister's hand me down female jeans.......yeah #### that helped me learn to punch first.

Also, snack.

In Moncton they used to have elementary school snack, free snack was a milk and crackers. If you paid you could get Apple or Orange Juice and cheese or peanut butter (this was late 70's). Everyone in my class except me and a girl that smelled got something other than milk and crackers. Worst part was all winter the milk was always frozen solid.

What is you took this approach with homeless people that ask for money?

I was also jealous of friends with GI Joes.
My parents had weird arbitrary rules.

GI Joes: Nope too violent
Vast array of realistic looking toy guns including M-16s, Uzis and the like: No problem

Nurf guns

parents thought it was too dangerous to have on
my uncle had bought me one and made him return it but having a GT Snow Racer was not dangerous enough LOL

Not to be another downer, but I was also jealous of kids who got to go to grad with the person they actually liked. Going to all the school-age functions by myself or with a girl sucked.

Kinda jealous of the kids who don't have those barriers these days, noting that many still do though.

I dunno....this thing looks super dangerous...Look at these kids just flying full tilt down hills with no helmets. This thing looks designed to spin out and flip over and there's no way a car is seeing this thing.

Transformers do reissue these every few years. They just reissued soundwave last year....I may or may not have bought a bunch and put them on display in my living room...and my fiancee loses her mind about them every so often

Todays a good day, I have officially adopted my 12 year old foster son who goes to school in eyeliner and tights and gets no grief at all for clearly being LBGT, I'm scared witless for him but kids dont care these days
