It is a disgrace that the Flames have squandered Gaudreau's time here, like Iginla before him.
An absolute gift in the 4th round and one of the most exciting players to have played for the team in decades.

The thing is, Ottawa is a young team of no names but they are getting the most out of that team.
Any team can play better than the sum of their parts and its disingenuous to keep banging on the refrain of "just try harder" or "it's not the coach" when clearly that is a huge part of the mix.

I would build around Markstrom while I could. I think Tanev is a top flight defensive D man. Valimaki could be great. And I think then they have a large number of complementary players. I think Treliving figured he had no elite players after Bennett didn’t pan out, so he’d try to get at least two very good lines based on Lindholm-Tkachuk and Monahan-Gaudreau and a decent supporting cast. It hasn’t worked out very well. A team like that has to have a lot of drive and this one doesn’t.
I’m fine with a new GM and a new coach. Boston did very well with skaters who are high end but not superstars, unless you say Bergeron is a superstar two way player.

I mean, this has got to be worth something if Murray Edwards isn't willing top pay for top coaching talent, right?

Off-season? Come on we all know that if there is one thing bubble teams should be doing it’s trading a mid-round pick for 20 games of a 7th defenceman who is no better than defencemen already on the team at or just before the trade deadline.
Can’t wait to see who this year’s Fantenberg or Forbort is!

Yeah, good luck getting any value for guys who look like they're playing with their sticks upside-down.

Well...Vladdy Jr lost 42 pounds and looks poised to have a huge bounce back season. I think finally having a legit lead off man like George Springer will be huge. If the starting rotation stays healthy and the bull pen holds up...who knows?

You would build around 31 year old Markstrom and 31 year old Tanev?

Also not elite, obviously, but at least he’s worked on things they have asked this year. I’ll give him that.
Name an elite player in this league who is not a great skater. The Flames don’t have one.

Very different players, I see his point though...Gaudreau would absolutely dominate playing with the right players but he can't carry a line on his back. Wasting his talents for sure...look at his opposite wingers. Bennett, Leivo, Simon lol...can you think of worse players for a playmaker to play with?

I agree. He has elite vision and offensive instincts. However he is not an elite player overall. Which is ok. Heck, the only forwards who are elite in the north division go by the name of McDavid, Draisatl and Matthews.
I wouldn't even put Scheflie, Marner(who actually plays a decent defensive game too) or Tavares in that category. Overall as a player, as much as I love Johnny as a player, he is below them as well.

I still don’t get Trelivings logic on this offseason.
I get that it would have been tough to make core changes and trades with the pandemic, there was very little player movement this offseason.
Then I get in that case you want to add the core and try to take one last shot with this group by adding Markstrom and Tanev to this roster.
But then you don’t even interview a coach like Boudreau or Gallant that’s available and instead give Ward an extension. Not even being really confident in that hiring and you give what’s almost a lame duck head coaching deal with a 2 year $900k contract.
Like it just doesn’t make any sense to do those other things, and then stick with the guy that was badly outcoached in the playoffs and didn’t really have the team playing well at all.
