Default Living in Western Germany ... Help

Hey Guys

I may be spending the summer in Western Germany's Duisberg, I was wondering if anyone could give me the lifestyle of how Duisberg is like, and good places to visit for short vacations (other then the obvious Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Berlin)

Any tips, experiance, things to expect, et al would be great.

Thanks

I have a friend who lives in Duisberg with whom I can put you in touch. PM if you want her e-mail.

No, but if I did, I would be sure to explore and discover as much as I could.
I would maybe also get a hold of Icarus's friend, maybe.
I friend of mine went to Vienna in 89, and he did not know any German, or anyone, and did not have a lot of coin his pocket. He is still there.

Oh haha. I'm a traveller, so for sure I would be absorbing as much as possible. I've been looking at almost anything I could find about Duisburg's social life and culture (a little dissapointing) and checking train times for all the major attractions around there. My actual hope is I get to go to Stuttguard instead, since its close to Switzerland and Austria (2 of my favs in Europe). It's also alot more convinient to visit Poland (Krakow), Hungary (Budapest), Slovakia (Bratislava), Croatia (Dubrovnik), Slovania (I'm not even going to try and spell the name) which are at the top of places I'd like to visit.

Ok, I'm rambling...

If you have the opportunity, I sure hope you take it. I had an opportunity to spend an indefinite amount of time in Hamburg before, and declined (because I my girlfriend was sad... boo hoo). It was right after grad, and I figured life would be full of those types of opportunities. I have to live with the regret now...

It's between Duisberg, Burnaby (Vancouver) or maybe New York (my first choice, if I get an offer)

The other options pay 4 times as much as Duisberg, although its probably bad to make the decision based on a summer jobs pay.

I guess on a sidenote, I was in Calgary for 2004, Edmonton for 2006, Vancvouer better not make the finals in 2007 if I go to Burnaby.

Dude, seriously, what about Prague? The best city in Europe, bar none.

Spent a week in Prague a few years ago. Places are usually not as good the 2nd time you go.

You will be close to Koln I think (Cologne).

Duisberg is a heavy industrial area.

Koln is a fun city, with lots of students and night life. Try the famous Kolsch beer.

Koblenz is my favorite place in Germany. It is at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel rivers. You can head up either river for a cruise, and see castles and vinyards. Trier is an old Roman town, up the Mosel.

Amsterdam is interesting, but a bit of a tourist trap.

Brugge in Belgium is one of the nicest Eurpean cities. Maastricht in the Netherlands is nice.

Do you like champagne? Go to the areas around Reims, France.

Of course Prague, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest are great, but they are a long drive from Duisberg. There are airlines that offer very cheap flights around Europe out of Koln. It is so cheap, many germans fly to Barcelona, just for a day trip.
