Yeah, these professional hockey players can't pass.

They have not made an earnest attempt to change their systems. And I'd wager you know that. It's the same crap over and over. Ward doesn't know how to win, except that year in the DEL Who coached the winner there last year? Are they available?

The thing I can't stand with this 'our details were good or have to be better' is it's akin to the QB who doesn't get pressure. He sits in the pocket and good receivers will get away from coverage. The coverage (detail) was good but you can't expect them to keep doing for so long. And in that moment where a stick gets free, a bounce happens etc.

You say our details were bad. NO! Play with the puck in the offensive zone. That's better. You can't play perfect defensively if you don't generate offense every damn game.

I expect them to play down to Ottawa, unfortunately.

They might win those games, but I don't think it will be in glorious or convincing fashion.

They don't like to dictate and don't want to for more than a period at a time.

I challenge them to prove me wrong.

Exactly, the goal shouldn't to play perfect defense but to play less defence. The more time you spend attacking the less time you have to spend defending.

Too passive, too slow, too many opportunities for the other team and way too few for us.

Not only is this not winning hockey, it is absolutely painful to watch.

It sure would have been nice to have a legitimate coach this season to see what we actually have in our players - but alas, here we are.

If there is one thing this group of players has an overwhelmingly frustrating tendency to do, it is to get in their own heads and overthink everything in the offensive zone when they are struggling. It is consistent and it's maddening. Coaching is not helping them right now, but it most definitely is not the only problem.

Flames thought they had it in the bag and slacked off.

4 games coming up, I see a split.

You are correct, they do not like to dictate at all, this group is more reactive than proactive and are mentally weak, if the Sens start taking the play to them early they will wilt.

Glass half full: Too much talent to keep scoring only 1 or 2 per game, and the defence and goaltending has been solid. They are due to breakout soon.

Glass half empty: it would be a total Flames move to start losing games 5-4, 6-5...

At least that'll be more fun.

At 1-1 the Leafs were trying to win and the Flames were trying for OT.

Ward has sucked all the attack out of this team and got them playing scared. It's sad to watch.

A seasoned coach who has seen this team squander leads late before is probably on the players backs for desperation and attention to detail as soon as that goal is scored (by Mangiapane).

Would like to see footage of Ward in those final minutes, but I doubt he was on the ball there judging by the intensity leading up to the goal against.

This core group has been mentally weak for years. Can't blame every single thing on Ward.

Technically true, I suppose.

Nobody is blaming everything on Ward.

You can blame some things on Ward.

I was hoping Ward would be a quick learner in his first head coaching gig but it really seems he is not the head coach this group of players needs.

I would love for Treliving to be bold and make a coaching change but like many others have stated I don't see it happening.

It would be a shame if he makes a major shake up to the core and we don't see them get one last shot to go out swinging on offence, but instead collapsing on defence.

Prevent hockey and 200-foot hockey are not the same thing.

I think the Flames think they're doing the latter when it's very much the former.

First bolded part - no.

Second bolded part - absolutely.

Here’s a tip for you.

If you really believe they can’t pass, “an earnest attempt to change their systems” won’t make an iota of difference.

You can repeat this claim but that doesn't make it true.

This team has been one of the better comeback teams, whether that's games or seasons, the last six years. That is the opposite of mentally weak.

No, you can't blame 'every' single thing on Ward. There're some roster issues. But when the team is constantly gripping their sticks and failing to make effective, clean breakouts? That has nothing to do with mental toughness and everything to do with strategy and confidence.
