Free agency would be a terrible thing for him.

I'm certainly not questioning the possibility, if I was him I'd love to go play in my hometown with my best friend. That sounds amazing.
What's annoying is the people that argue with 100% certainty that it's absolutely going to happen and anyone that believes otherwise are delusional. It's like they want it to happen

LOL Francis isn't exactly making a big reach here as if you connect the dots of him hating flying, being an american and having a girlfriend and family out east the odds are that he would probably rather play closer to home. However Francis is paid to cover the Flames and usually media people don't speak in absolutes unless they have inside information and Francis clearly doesn't here. I believe Johnny won't re-sign with the Flames but I'm just a poster on a forum that doesn't get paid to cover a team and be a supposed insider.

I thought Pinder handled that perfectly. Asking whether he flat out knew that Gaudreau would turn down a long term big $ contract to sign here.
Francis was not expecting to be challenged on that point and his response was weak.

funny how the - in that word really changes it......anywyas, for the record i am not eric francis, and i have never been in his kitchen. i just get that he is a sports opinion guy who has an opinion. i don't take everything he says as gospel and i get that sometimes he says stuff to get a reaction.
i read his stuff and make a decision on what i think makes or does nor make sense; however, i enjoy it for what it is.
to me reading his stuff is not much different than reading a lot of posts here
as an aside, i would really like to know what factors motivate a guy when he is sifting thru free agent offers. i'd be stunned if things like "well this reporter thought i would never re-sign with the flames" would be much of a thought

Second, "self-fulfilling prophecy" comes to mind. A lot of people have been claiming that Johnny's never gonna re-sign here, and it's been going on for years. At what point does that become a factor in his decision?

I lost respect for Eric Francis when he questioned Monahan's character and lack of will to win (in reality he was playing through injuries that required 4 surguries), or when he tweeted that Brodie was "weak" for declining a Team Canada invitation for the second time due to what Brodie called "family commitments" (Brodie's wife had been recently diagnosed with MS the year prior).
This Gaudreau stuff, whether he actually ends up leaving the Flames are not, just further demonstrates how Francis makes stuff up because he has no real insider information. "Even a broken clock is correct twice a day."
In yesterday's radio clip with Pinder, Francis also accused Johnny of lying ("paying lip service") when Johnny said he wants to be [in Calgary] long term.
Why would any player trust him with actual information?

Rogers is paying Francis for that level of insight. Think about that.

I thought that sound was Francis realizing he needs to change into a clean pair of pants.

Yeah, sorry, I have no problem with people trashing Eric Francis. The guy attacks players on a personal level, insinuates that they're liars, mocks players going through personal issues, mocks players getting hurt, and then to top it off, has the nerve to threaten to sue people on twitter when they aren't treating him "fairly."
Group apology? Eric is not an insider, nobody likes him, nobody trusts him. But it doesn't matter. If he ends up being right he's going to filled will so much self-satisfaction that his back will get sore from patting himself on it.

Having a foil like Pinder would make Francis tolerable.
Most of our media just nod along and let Francis speak.

Listening to todays Spittin Chiclets
The interview is with a Pittsburgh media guy ranting about Dreger making up rumours about Crosby getting traded. As a quick interlude, Bissonette brings up the time he jokingly made up the rumour about Gaudreau being out of shape in camp one year and brings up Eric Francis' name as a rumour-monger.

Not sure where to put this but they talked about signing Gaudreau long term on the FAN. Pat said from what he heard there is interest from the Gaudreau camp to stay and he took the comments he made about Calgary being a second home and wanting to play his career here at face value.

Yup. Stajan was commenting on how Edmonton's depth has helped them this year, and right when he started mentioning it, Francis immediately started smugly smiling, and shaking his head, and badly wanted to interject into Stajan's comments. When Staj was done, Francis said something like, "You're never gonna get me to agree that the Oilers have depth", and went on almost mockingly, talking about it. Then at the end he said something like,"That's just Staj sticking up for his fellow 4th liners". I would've liked to see him be slapped.

Like almost everyone I saw that exchange and it was clearly meant as humorous.
I avoid the "we hate this player, this week" strings.
I'm amazed, not surprised, this string on Francis exists.
READ the comments on any string here, they make Francis' opinion pale in comparison to the wild ideas some people here post. You guys think Francis is over the top? There are more over the top and crazy and in fact often nasty takes on players at this site. Regular posters here think Francis is "controversial"???
Cancel culture from here? For Francis?
Too funny.

For the record Eric there are few if any fans on this site that have the disdain for Gaudreau you have shown over the past few years. Plenty of us may want him traded but few of us have ever dismissed his efforts like you have. Even Pinder was going off on the airwaves about how you were talking about Johnny like he was worthless as a trade asset.

Why should posters on a fan forum be held to the same standards as someone in the media who actually interacts with the players?
Gaudreau's relatives, Jim Gaudreau and Katie Gaudreau, clearly hate Francis. Jim just trashed Francis on twitter yesterday.
These relatives don't know that we exist. And even if they did, they wouldn't care. We don't spread rumors that hurt his reputation or change the perception of his character.
Pretty much everyone on Calgarypuck likes Gaudreau. He was a 4th round pick and has always brought tremendous value. He also has a good contract and has been with the organization for a decade.
