They don't feel like the kind of duo that would make an announcement and come back later. They always kind of just did it at their own pace, so it's not like there was any pressure.
It would have been nice for them to go out with a new album so the last work they did was their own. I'm holding out hope for one last Daft Punk surprise.
I think Daft Punk emptied their tank on their last run of music, they must of amassed a lot of music during their hiatus and then released all the best stuff. It was pretty incredible they were able to make an album as good and as relevant as random access memories so late in their career, I can't think of too many artists that have equalled such a feat.

It seems strange that a lot of the articles I read on it say they have split up, it seems like more of a retirement to me. Amazing duo, and still one of my favorites to listen to.
Wonder if the video means one of them decided to retire, while the other one still wanted to continue, so he's going solo. Hence the blowing up of one, while the other continues to walk.
I was never a big fan of their music, I don't think that we can argue about how successful and influential they were. With a long career. I really also respect their willingness to walk away instead of being a pair of 60 year olds, playing oldies concerts at Legion halls and extorting 90 years olds to raise their hands in the air.
Good on them.

As a fan of electronic music, they were never amongst my favorite acts but I always respected how much influence they had for many artists. Truly some iconic songs and music videos.
Maybe now that they've split, they will stop making the dj mag top 100 DJ list and other various dj ranking lists every year. Most are joke lists anyways, but regardless it always annoyed me to see them get so many votes when they barely played any DJ sets in over a decade.
Still waiting for my refund from their cancelled show in Calgary at the Republik back in '08...
Daft Punk were scheduled to play Republik in Calgary in 2008?
Yup. Just bought my brand new 2008 car so I remember it was that year. I was all hyped to pick up my buddies in my brand new ride and be the DD that night. Bought 2 tickets than remember getting an email a couple days before saying the show was cancelled and refunds would be coming shortly. Never got the refund .

Seems unlikely given their last show was December 2007.
I was thinking it wasn't possible simple because an act that large that plays so infrequently wouldn't possibly play a small venue in Calgary. But looking at their tour history, it was actually post 2007 that they barely played.
In 2006-2007 they were all over the place and it was so random. They'd play major festivals, but then they'd go to like "Hall 5, International Centre, Mississauga" and then Bell Centre in Montreal. They also have a trail of small theatres in random US cities.
So considering the show was cancelled in Calgary in 2008, maybe they had a bunch of similar small venue shows booked and cancelled them all? And maybe that was kind of the beginning of the end of them touring regularly.
