Fair enough, not sure about that. Would you trade their D and Goaltending for ours? I Bet not....lol

Coaching is a problem among a whole host of problems. But we are fundamentally missing high end talent in comparison with each team in this division with the exception of Ottawa.

The reason we're complaining about incomplete efforts so often? This team has lower margin for error than most because we lack the high end skill to take shifts off. The real crux of the issue is it's not like we have a roster full of hustling try-hard's either. It's a slow roster with lazy, skilled players - just not as skilled as most of their opponents.

You bring in a new coach that will scare them into some better habits in the short term and you'll see a bump in team performance, but not enough to make up for what the roster is lacking: speed, hustle, and skill
Have you seen Stutzle? He's the real deal.
Also, Johnny is high-end talent. Flames could have more, but he is full value.

Quenneville is my ideal coach for this roster. Too bad that ship is long gone.

He would be my first choice too. Problem is, 5.25M per year-7M with bonuses. Coaches are being paid like players, thanks to Babcock.

The games against Ottawa in the next two weeks will be paramount for the Flames.

The Flames have more talent.

Having watched most of the Sens games, they work their asses off.

Very concerned that the Flames will not match or surpass the Sens work ethic.

Hard work beats lazy talent most of the time.

The Sens have a pretty big, mean team too, in addition to their work ethic. Beating them is not a given for this team right now.

No doubt. I only wanted to mention Stutzle.
Also agree with your point about hard work. I'm worried.

If the team is willing to spend $80M+ on players, $5M+ for a great coach should be no big deal. It's like spending a ton of money on a high performance sports car and not paying the extra money for the premium fuel it needs to make it run properly.

You would think so, but the speculation is that Edwards won't let the GM spend big money on a coach. With the economy right now, and the fiscal uncertainty because of Covid, I'm sure he wants the monetary expenditures kept even tighter.

Gaudreau should be moved ASAP if he's not re-signing. They should have a clear indication at this point how willing he is and at what price tag. With another year left on his deal he has great value considering his contract.

I don't see how you move Backlund when guys like Henrique and Tyler Johnsson went through waivers and nobody picked him up for free. Or Gio for that matter.

That is early in the season.
By deadline there will be teams with cap space looking for help.

Backlund's and Gio's deals run multiple years which I think is the reason why no one wanted Henrique or Johnsson either. Most teams are in cap trouble and with the flat cap none of these contracts look hot right now.

Players with big contracts clear waivers because teams can't fit the salary in or they have an internal cap, I'm really not sure why this is so hard to understand.

As for Gaudreau, you trade him if you want to go full tank mode because he's the player who stirs the offence, when he's not scoring he's taking the other teams best checking line allowing others to score. you what a boring low scoring team?...trade Gaudreau

I mean if guys like Tyler Johnsson or Henrique would have great value in the current economic environment teams would find space for them. Solid players but considering their contracts, value isn't great.

If Gaudreau signs I don't have a problem keeping him.

I’m not so sure this is the case anymore. It used to be sure, but is it still?

It’s arguable, but just for reference: The Hockey News last year ranked our defence #7 in the league. We lost Brodie and Hamonic, but gained Tanev (who’s been a bit of a revelation), and Valimaki full-time. Gio lost a step last year, but Andersson has leapt forward IMO. Now if you take into account that our coach is sub-par, we have a D on paper that’s hard to top. How long did it take for Hanifin-Tanev to be scored on 5 on 5?

There’s teams, like the Canadiens for example, who’s D is more effective because they are coached better, and play a better system that they’re built for, but I say ours is better on paper. I still say top-10 in the league. Just my opinion though.

Hard work beats lazy talent most of the time.
And even mediocre work beats bad systems that don't leverage the talent available and systems that actually work against that talent. I can't even watch this team any more it is so maddening/frustrating to see players work against their instincts to make plays that are to comply with the system instead of use their talent. The moronic breakout, the backward puck movement, the five man attack, useless cycle around the perimeter that never results in anything, the overuse of the points, the abandonment of the use of the middle of the ice, it is all systemic and does not leverage the talent on the team. Hard work is wonderful, but how about work smarter and use the talent of the individuals on the team? What we are seeing is a team that works stupid. I'm waiting for the "chop wood, carry water" moment.

I get it man. You're part of the coaching fraternity and believe that hard work solves everything. I really do get it. But coaches coach to the level they themselves understand, not to the pinnacle. It's human nature. The same problem exists in every industry. We see that with Ward. He coaches to his level, not the level of the team. This is team that needs a coach who has been there and done that. Barry Trotz would have been an outstanding choice, but Treliving didn't even talk to him when he was available (I know, I talked with Trotz). So why are the Flames always stuck with coaches that are cutting their teeth in the head coach role and are not employable elsewhere? I think its all about power dynamics within the organization.

The biggest problem facing this team right now is ego. Treliving has to be the smartest guy in the room which is why he hires piss poor coaches. Smart executives surround themselves with people smarter than them in their areas of expertise. Treliving doesn't do that and that's why we have AHL level coaches running this team. Until Treliving gets out his own way and recognizes the importance of surrounding oneself with successful people, and manage their ambition, this team will continue to circle the toilet and go no where. But that's what you get when you hire away an unproven assistant GM from an organization rife with power and political struggles like the Coyotes. Tre is a reflection of the organization that trained him.

Last year was a long time ago. Gios declining and isn’t a Norris dman anymore. Brodie worked very well with Gio so maybe he’s missing that. Tanev and Hanafin look good, and granted I’m not watching all the games but the bottom pairing is getting caved in.

This is still with Markstrom covering up a ton of gaffes too.
