You think Backlund is the only player prone to lazy and stupid penalties?

Sure, I agree with you there. But we have no idea what’s going on in the room. What’s the point in kicking off a witch hunt?

Ideally, in my view, the Flames can trade Gio and Backlund and see how that goes, if the team is still junk and inconsistent then you commit to a bigger retool and trade one of Gaudreau or Monahan.
Unfortunately, the Flames have run out of time with Gaudreau's contract situation and basically need to decide what to do in the offseason.

Not saying that. But for a leader on this team, with all the pressure of a poor showing for this team so far this season, down 2 goals in a battle of Alberta with all of the momentum swung back the Flames way it was sure a stupid move. It ended killing that momentum and breaking this fragile team.
If you were on this losing team who is just not clicking and you saw one of the leaders of your team take a completely unnecessary penalty resulting in a goal in the back of your net in those circumstances would you feel like rallying behind that leadership?

I don't think it is really a witch hunt, it is performance based, both Backlund and Gio have been around the longest and the Flames have been better on paper than actual results for the majority of it.
I think the retool starts with them.

I don’t know man. You’re picking out an isolated incident in one game. There’s bigger fish to fry here.

If you really want a culture change and this would be an off-season move I think.
Ship Gio out
Ship Backlund Out
Ship one of Monahan or Johnny out
Name Tkachuk Captain
Hire BB or GG as your new head coach.
Possibility of a top 5 pick to add

Yeah fair enough I guess. You gotta admit though it was pretty stupid and completely deflated all of the momentum they had gained

I personally would not put Tkachuk as captain. He has not shown the desire to either play or lead in the last few weeks.

It feels like groundhog day as a Flames fan: A roster that's not good enough to be a playoff team, but not bad enough to get high end talent in the draft.
A rebuild is mission critical for the franchise at this stage, but the worst part is it's one of the messiest situations to rebuild in the entire league that I can think of. A veteran team that just made a huge splash in free agency...I can't see them tearing it down just ~1 month into the season.
This is unfortunately going to get worse before it gets better. I suspect we'll see a GM press all the buttons he can to get the team into the playoffs because he sold a vision that these offseason acquisitions were the missing pieces. We'll need to see this excruciatingly painful season play out and I think we can all see where's it's headed.
As a fanbase, it's the hardest stage of a team to watch. There's little to no direction and even less hope.
The good news, I think, is this is the final season we'll see of it.

Not saying Tkachuk needs to be Captain, heck if someone is giving a ton for him he can go too.

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Toffoli
Gaudreau - Monahan - Anderson (for Hanifin due to having enough depth there).

Monahan + Zary + Kylington + Parsons + Lucic ($1.25 mill retained) + 2021 1st + 2023 1st + 2022 2nd + 2022 3rd
For
Eichel + Skinner ($2.5 mill retained)
Gaudreau + 2022 1st + 2021 2nd
For
Konecny + Patrick
Backlund + Bennett + Phillips + 2023 2nd + 2021 3rd
For
Forsberg
Tkachuk – Eichel – Konecny
Forsberg – Lindholm – Skinner
Dube – Patrick - Mangiapane
Unreal top 9
Are we giving away too many picks? Yes, but those picks will be useless as we enter win now mode (again) but with a better roster with a franchise center (finally).
I'm sure Buffalo wants to get out of Skinner's 6 more years at $9 mill cap hit and will retain $2.5 mill to do so, and in return they only get Lucic for 2 more years at $4 mill since we'll retain $1.25 mill. The 3 1sts (including Zary) should be what Buffalo is looking for on top of Mohanan, the other players/prospects and picks
Philly is in win now mode and has been for years with Giroux and Voracek and Gaudreau helps them take that leap. He's the best player in that deal + they get a 1st and a 2nd. Hopefully they're down on Patrick due to his health issues and it seems like Konecny's stock is somewhat low with them right now after his benching earlier this year.
And the Forsberg deal is just for the hell of it since he's not on their untouchable list apparently lol. Hopefully they like Backlund in return as they love their defensive forwards
Anyways, will these deals make us a better team than we are now without rebuilding? Yes. Will any of these happen? Nope lol. But let me dream alright!

It is pretty hilarious to see people suggesting they tear it down and tank for high picks. This team is still young and has just signed a goalie to a long term deal with a full NMC.
Big changes are needed but anyone that thinks they are going to take the Sens route right before the fans come back is completely out of touch with reality.
If Treliving is fired the new GM will be told to build a winner right away.

Yes, it’s like deja vu of the 09/10 season where we shipped out Phaneuf, then Jokinen and Prust among some other small meaningless deals. The only player of note to come of it, Matt Stajan.
Dressing room malaise and discontent resulted in trades that maintained mediocrity at best.
Perhaps we should have waited and not only converted those assets but the bigger pieces for a faster fresh start.
Hard to say but it just feels like a mistake we are about to repeat.

Don't think the Flames are going to tank, well if they stay the course this season they could easily get a top 5 pick imo.
But moving Gio and Backlund for picks and injecting some youth isnt really gonna move the needle.
But moving Johnny etc for other players in similar age would just be a retool.

I think a retool is the only realistic option we have as fans. There are good pieces here but the mix clearly isn’t working. Definitely feels like there is a problem in the room.

Honestly, in an ideal world, this would be my plan for this season (a quick re-tool):
1. Fire Treliving
2. Bring in a new GM
3. Try and trade the following for futures: Giordano, Backlund, Rittich, Ryan, Bennett
4. Trade Gaudreau for Konecny
5. Trade Monahan for Forsberg
6. Let this season ride out and pick-up a Top 5 pick
7. The new core: Lindholm, Tkachuk, Konecny, Forsberg, Mangiapane, Dube, Andersson, Valimaki, Hanifin, Tanev, Markstrom
8. Fire Ward and hire a proven coach in the off-season
9. Fill-out the rest of the roster with a mix of veterans and younger players. Don't go bargain bin hunting in Free Agency, instead pick up some solid options with the futures collected in Step 3.
10.
2021-2022 Coach: Gallant or Boudreau
2021-2022 Core Forwards: Tkachuk, Lindholm, Mangiapane, Dube, Konecny, Forsberg, Top 5 Pick
2021-2022 Core Dmen: Andersson, Valimaki, Hanifin, Tanev
2021-2022 Goalie: Markstrom
I think that would be a solid overhaul and there are still some pieces leftover (and cap space) to continue on a winning track.

Jesus ####ing Christ, this stuff is getting stupid and old. A nine asset for two asset trade. Then a five asset for one asset trade. Zero thought as to why teams would do such things or the impacts those deals would have the health of the organization, just do it "for the hell of it." We need a couple of wins just so people will stop posting this nonsense.

There are a couple of underperforming teams looking to change it up. Not necessarily blockbuster trades, but teams like Buffalo, Anaheim and Nashville have some pieces that the Flames could use.
