You can easily make a change right after the faceoff, happens all the time with teams who choose to adapt. Ward chose to leave them out, better yet don’t start them in the defensive zone as shift #1

Tying in Friedman was an immediate red flag for me. How the heck would he know? Call another agent?!?
No reason Gelinas would do that either — seems ridiculous for anyone to do that, let alone someone who actually played 1000 NHL games.

Throwing in the towel a 1/4 of the way through the season seems like a good way to be miserable.
There is plenty of season left. Blowouts happen. Onto the next game. The team isn't going to quit playing just because they lost a bad game to their rivals.
The team isn't that great. It's true. Ebbs and flows of a season and ebbs and flows of a hockey team.
Just enjoy the ride and don't invest so much of you emotions and happiness on the outcome of a sport you have no control over.

I don’t care if they “care” and “hate losing”, their on ice performance has never been able to harness emotion and play effective when things get difficult. When this team needs to punch back, we have no one to lead the charge. Tkachuk is trying to be that guy, and he looks like the jagged nail that needs to be hammered down to be in line with the rest of the absolute garbage.
I hate the culture of this team, and it’s 100% on Treliving, the coaching staff, and the leadership group in the locker room.

Fully agree with this. I was calling for Gio to be traded this last off season because of it. I’m even more sure now that he needs to go. It’s not because of his on ice play. He is still a very good dman that has declined a bit with age, but still very good none the less. This core needed a big culture change and it starts with the captain . I’m not one who believes in stripping the captaincy away and having him stay on team. There needed to be a huge message sent to the core that the culture needed to change. Other moves needed to happen with the core but for me the main trade that needed to happen was trading Gio. Don’t even get me started with the resigning of Ward . That was just plain dumb from the get go.

You can also easily get stuck depending on how the play goes. You can’t just leave the ice if you have a man to defend and no time to get off. It happens all the time.
People clamour for Gawdin to play, he plays and gets caught in a bad matchup and people complain. Stupid.

I’m not complaining Gawdin played at all, but you can pretend that’s what it is.

I think Gio should see that the team is transitioning. The core is different and the leadership needs to from the core. Time he steps back and passes the torch. I don’t think he needs to be traded necessarily. Idk, is there a precedent of a captain passing the torch, staying with the team and it working?

No, you are complaining about something Ward had the least control over. Who the other coach put on against Gawdin and whether Gawdin could have gotten off the ice without compromising the play.

Regarding this Gelinas myth... Are we sure he didn't just say to Tkachuk "Let's SWEEP together"??

Gio is nowhere near the level of play that Neal was when traded for lucic. Also reports Neal was horrid in the locker room so they had no choice but to trade him. I’m not saying they would get a 1st line player for Gio . They could have eaten a bit of salary and gotten back a solid middle six player . With covid cap in place they certainly wouldn’t be able to send his whole salary out for picks, but they could have done something . I have my doubts that Tre even thought about trading Gio , which is a red flag for me.

Oh ya,,,and the 99 point guy was awesome last night without him. You can bet if both of them were on the trade block the 99 point guy would have fewer takers.

Gawdin: 4 hits, 1 block, and 1 takeaway in 6:04 ice time. Was -1, but that's not too bad in a 7-1 loss.

There is a problem with the leadership core on this team. If they can't step up and lead the team (and they obviously can't) then we need a coach who can assume that role (and obviously that is not Ward).
If we had Sutter or Torts as a coach they would take the heat off the players and put it on themselves. All Ward does is pass the buck back on the players.
A Sutter or Torts type would also have the team embrace the "villains of the North Division" storyline that the media was trying to push and use it as a rallying point to bring the team together. Instead we end up with a neutered Tkachuk and Bennett wanting out.

Yes. Same issue...started watching on cbc which was hit and miss. I am ready to cancel my subscription, between last night and the jets games, rogers has been dog shirt. Last year I enjoyed having the option of watching all of the American games on NBC or Fox broadcasts...but that is not applicable this year. The Flames play resembles rogers production quality...so frankly...it's been a waste of money and more importantly...time.

I mean we all know the script by now on this Flames team a few times before. They will do nothing, no coach firing, no trades. I’d be willing to bet they go on a 6-8 game winning streak here shortly, they seem to do that every year around this point of the season. They’ll finish just in or just out of the playoffs, no chance they just get us a high draft pick or something.

Any team is only as good as the sum of its parts and unfortunately we appear to have quite a few parts that are either broken, too old or don't fit together.
Ward - To say it appears he is struggling to adapt from AHL to NHL coaching is an understatement. Getting 20 somethings to play a certain way is one thing, getting buy in from vets is another. One thing I am struggling to understand is his inabilty to know the best lines to put together to give us the best chance to win. It is not like he has just walked in off the street, although results would say differently, so how can he not see what is best. Is he really giving the palyers too much rope, is he letting them decide where they want to play, because we have seen that giving this group too much say in the running of things does not go well.
Gio - The man has worked his away across different leagues around the world, earned an NHL contract and put it all on the line for this team, earning awards along the way, and for that he deserves a lot of respect but I wonder if he has hit the 'can't be bothered age'? Kind of like when you go out clubbing and drinking every night when you are younger but eventually you hit the 'been there, done that' and can no longer be bothered to go out every night. Same with Gio, fought hard but can't be bothered with the rough and tumble every game, is this why he told Chucky to calm it down? He's the captain and how hard he pushes the team pushes, maybe not as much as he used to or we need the team to?
Overall team mood - There just feels like there is something off with the team, whether that is a combination of wards coaching, the need for a players only meeting after 6(?) Games, which made very little difference, the shuffling of lines, the Bennett did he/didn't he what line is he on tonight, chucky told to calm it down and not play his game (do we know if this actually happened), is there a power struggle bewteen groups of players? Who knows but something is not right.
If this isn't sorted out quickly then this is truly done.
Sorry for the long post
