Does Pearson seriously charge $20 for improvement fees?
That airport is TERRIBLE. They have no decent restaurants, nowhere to really wait past security, and have nowhere in the general terminal either. (Terminal 1)
At least Calgary has places like montana's and chilis on the premises.
I hate Pearson.

Fotze, I wasn't very good at math in school but $5 -> $20 seems more than 30%...

I thought Terminal 1 has been under reconstruction for a number of years and was recently completed?

Isn't this like a 300% increase?
If the fees had doubled, it would be a 100% jump.
Since they increased by 3 times that amount, wouldn't is be 300% (3 x 100% increase)?
A 30% increase would be $5 to $6.50.
That headline from the Herald is screwed. Send Lisa Schmidt back to math class.

33% of $15 is $5.
The fee went from $15 to $20. So up by $5; and 33% of $15 is $5.
(Am I the only one who can understand Fotze?)

I'm in the Bobblehead camp on this one. Going from $5 to $20 would be a 300% jump. However, after reading the quote in the paper about 8 times I see what they're getting at. The fee is going from $15 to $20. It's increasing by $5. Not fotze's fault, that is just a really poorly worded sentence IMHO.

Yeah, it could be that I had heard this on the news this morning, so I already knew what they were talking about.

Ha I think so...I had to re-read it twice before I got it .
I think most people got "confused" by the first bolded part (below)...when you do a skimming read, it gives you the impression that the rate went up from 5 bucks to $20:
Starting June 1, the Calgary Airport Authority will raise its improvement fee by $5 to $20 for domestic and international flights. The charge for trips to Edmonton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Lloydminster will rise $5 to $15 a ticket.
But if you have to stop and read it the first part is $15 to $20. same with the 2nd bolded part (from $10 to $15). Its right, but the way that it is written I could see causing some confusion... (not fotze, but the article).
Fredr -- beat me to it and in a much more concise way.

By $5, not from $5 (D'oh! Reading comprehension is not my friend this morning. This has already turned into "One of THOSE days". *sigh*))

My problem isn't with the fees. Fine, that's a cost of doing business.
Just make it part of the cost of the ticket. Don't sell me a ticket to Winnipeg for $40, and the total cost return trip ends up being $250.

Are we going to start seeing chocolate bars for 15 cents....plus the 20 cent peanut fee, 30 cent chocolate fee, 25 cent nougat fee, 15 cent quality control (wrapper) fee.
I know this isn't really related to this airport fee but it still peeves me.

I'm with you. Tell me how much I need to shell out. Your advertising of an artificially low amount just ****es me off when I find out the real cost.

Hidden fees are sadly becoming the norm. About a decade ago I started to see "Fuel tax" on top of shipping fees whenever we shipped something from our shop. Now it's the norm. When I get a quote, I get a rate "Plus tax", meaning "Plus a charge that we can throw on top so if we quote too low I'll add a whack of fees on top so we make more money".
Gone are the days of a single quote for what you pay. I think we can thank the auto makers for that one.

Cell phone providers have been doing this since time immemorial. Your Rogers family plan is only $45/month! Act now! What they don't tell you is that there is a (bogus) system access fee for each phone, plus 911 charges, etc. Eerily similar to airline tickets.

I hate flying through Toronto with a passion. When i have to fly, I deliberately make sure i book a flight that connects somewhere else, even if it means paying $70 more or taking an extra hour. Anything beats going through customs at Pearson.
As for Calgary, as someone pointed out, they make massive customs rooms with about 7 detectors yet they only man 1-2.
Quite pathetic really.

Eh? I've been at YYC with all detectors manned. Now that's a zoo.
Still better than Pearson. The only airport where you have to change floors to catch a connecting flight!

That's not what bothers me.
It's the fact you have to wait and claim your baggage, line up at customs then get rid of your baggage again and THEN make your way accross the airport to your connecting flight.
If I fly international, I make sure I clear customs here by flying directly into the states for a connecting flight.

I'm amazed at how sterile the new T1 is at YYZ. Clinical white everwhere the eye can see. It's like trying to make a sensory deprivation tank for 12,000 people.
At least we don't have to line up and actually pay those AIF fees seperately, like how YVR made you in about 2000. Then you got really mad....

Wasn't there a law passed recently that will require the airlines to advertise the final price instead of the artificially low no-fees price? I thought it was supposed to be in effect by now, or did it die with the change of government.
