Benching Bennett with Monahan injured was inexcusable last night and remains so today.

Fire Ward immediately! I haven’t wanted the Flames to terminate someone so bad since Troy Brouwer.

After seeing this with Ward, I think the whole forum owes Brent Sutter an apology...

Ward being bad doesn’t make Brent good. Brent is irrelevant here and he should apologize to that garbage can

We shouldn’t have to endure COVID & Geoff Ward simultaneously

What would it take for Darryl Sutter to come back?

I wouldnt be surprised if he has called it a career. He's made mountains of money, we know he loves being on the farm with his family, and the guy has nothing left to prove.

Oh and he is 62 years old now. and the COVID world has changed things.

Well the issue is that they are down by a goal in the 3rd period with Monahan already not playing and he shortens the bench further with a non-NHL caliber player like Froese geting more ice time than the team needs. He's prioritizing sending a message over trying to do whatever it takes to win games and that's not going to work out well for him or the organization.

I havent seen the play and didnt notice it in real time, but if thats the case..... i get it. Though on a night when you are already without Monahan its going to hurt.

Its one area of his game they (management/multiple coaches) have been on him about for years and its one of the reasons he can't translate his game to success in the nhl. Laziness and awareness (IQ) have plagued him and when he lines up as a C, it gets exposed repeatedly.

It really is time for Gio to pass the mantle, but there is no obvious heir right now. When Conroy gave up the captaincy to Iginla, it was clear Iggy was the emerging leader of the team. Tkachuk has been the one people have expected to be next, but how can he get the C when he's not performing and doing things like in the last Canucks game where he took a knee in the d zone and watched a goal against being scored?

The Flames don't have anyone to fill his shoes.

He skates back with no power, covers no man, goes to the wrong side of the ice, and a goal is scored. It's a Neal-quality effort, and in a game where he has an opportunity to really hammer something nice together, he just craps the bed. So, yeah. Bench.

Exactly this. It's always been the same issue with Bennett. Bursts of effort with excruciating mental lapses, bad positional play, or just laziness.

Frankly he doesn't offer a lot on the offensive end so if he isn't covering his check and making plays in his own end then he is just a liability.

This isn't a Darryl Sutter roster. I know we all long for 2004, or even some of that King's magic, Darryl wins with big, heavy, hard to play against teams.

Who do we have, outside of Lucic, Bennett, Tanev and possibly Tkachuk, that can play Darryl Sutter hockey?

Can we just once hire a coach that fits with the type of players we have, instead of trying to force our players to fit the type of coach we hire? We need a coach with a gameplan designed around possesion, transition and skill... not dumping and chasing, hooking and holding, hitting and grinding, shooting and blocking, etc etc.

So if i am understanding (have not and will not wade through pages of mindless viotrol above) Bennett screwed the pooch yet again, coaching staff responds by sending a message in order to hopefully rectify such play moving forward.... and we blame the coach?

Is that where we are now?

Well Ward isn't doing himself any favours with line deployments, and the players aren't doing the coach any favour by playing bad hockey, and Bennett is doing no one favours by playing 6 minutes and being on the ice for both goals. Frankly whether Bennett was playing or not would very likely, almost certainly, would not have changed the result of the game.

Bennett is great example of someone with 3/4 of a set of tools, and the ability to learn/develop/pickup the rest of the tools needed to have a full set.... but he has no box to put them in, so they just keep dropping all over the place.
