I always thought there was a lot of reality to the old sea stories that we heard about, and its likely that there are things that we haven't seen yet living in the depths of the ocean.
"Here there be Monsters", is a map marking on an old 18th century naval map that my dad owns.

Sorry but I relate more to our intelligent mammalian cousins.

What, you mean you can only spare sympathy for one species at a time? I'm in...let's worry about the dolphins too!

Well, I certainly have no sympathy for most insect species, even if they are vital to the cute and furries that eat them.
But the Colossal Squid has the largest eyes in the Animal Kingdom. I can imagine in Colossoal Squid with sparking cute/teary eyes making me like them.

I hate you so much right now......
I was OBSESSED with that show as a kid. Drove my parents nuts. I tried to sign up for Scuba lessons when I was 8 years old.

Squid are remarkably intelligent as well. Squid and octopi are the most intelligent invertebrates, and if I remember correctly their brain sizes are comparable to those of a house cat. (Although comparable brain size is not necessarily a direct indicator of comparable intelligence)
Ahh.. here's the article I was remembering (seems consistent with what I remember from my old neuropsych texts)
http://discovermagazine.com/2003/oct/feateye
Quote:
That Steve was named Steve was also revealing: Octopuses are the only animals, other than mammals like cuddly seals, that aquarium workers bother to name. So Anderson, Seattle's lead invertebrate biologist, began to wonder: If keepers recognize octopuses as individuals, how much difference is there among individual octopuses? Might these bizarre-looking mollusks have personalities? And if so, how else might their evolution have converged with ours across a billion-year chasm?
Meanwhile, in the waters off Bermuda, Canadian comparative psychologist Jennifer Mather was asking similar questions. Mather had observed an Octopus vulgaris, the common Atlantic octopus, catch several crabs and return to its rock den to eat them. Afterward it emerged, gathered four stones, propped these at the den entrance and, thus shielded, took a safe siesta. The strategy suggested qualities that weren't supposed to occur in the lower orders: foresight, planning, perhaps even tool use.

I'd be more bothered if they were specifically hunting the squid. It was nearly dead when they brought it up, so releasing it probably would have done little good. There is scientific value to it, so I see nothing wrong with what they did. Personally I find many other practices far more bothersome (like shark hunting derby's).

Over under until the inevitable hollywood film titled "Colossal"? I'm thinking a mix between x-files and jaws.

Seen Sharkwater yet? I just watched it the other day and, while I already knew about the savagery that is shark-fin soup and had stopped eating at restaurants that had it on the menu about two years ago, I think I've come to the conclusion that I need to cut fish out of my diet entirely. Which sucks, because I love sushi.

Ya I guess it does look like the alien off Independence Day too, from that scene. If it does happen, Bill Pullman should be elected president immediately.
