Gotta wonder if there really is a trade market for Bennett.
There might not be this year.

So if you're going to lose Bennett at the expansion draft anyway (losing Sam Bennett for nothing would be so Flames), why not just waive him and hopefully gain some salary cap savings if he gets claimed?

How close is Sam Bennett to waivers

Mangiapane can plug in on any of the three lines and they're good. Dube plays well with Lucic ... but has struggled with Lindholm and Tkachuk.

Bennett has looked good with Lucic and Dube, but so too has Backlund.

Bennett and Simon have similar numbers but don't really work with Monahan and Gaudreau.

If I'm Ward I go back to Leivo, and leave him there for 5 games.
I go back to Bennett, and I leave him there for 5 games. His time there was interrupted by injury, but the production was promising.

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Lucic - Backlund - Dube

It's the clearest choice in my eyes. Give Lindholm, Backlund, Mangiapane, Dube, and Bennett PK time.

I also think it's time to completely re-work the 4th line and try to create a line that may put some youthful enthusiasm into the team, if only for a few games.

Leivo - Gawdin - Phillips

Do you even actually know that he requested a trade?

Idiotte called up his agent, asked him if Bennett would be open to a change of scene, and the Flames were reportedly blindsided by his report

I have not heard either Bennett's camp or the Flames come out and say that there was a trade request

So unless you can point us in the direction of a confirmed, documented trade request, I am not sure how you can have a firm opinion about what should be done about it

If Eliotte's report is misleading or an exaggeration then #### him. The Flames didn't need more locker room distractions than already existed. I hated the timing of it too, literally mid game.

And ever since there's been an awkwardness around Bennett as to whether he's playing for the team now or his value on the market.

Oh it was a dick move for sure. Trying to create a scoop for himself, he created a ton of negative and unwanted attention for a lot of people. With weasel word phrasing, planting the seed and letting it blow up

He could have gone about it in a more professional way but that was greasy

I am sure there are some people within the organization who have made note of it.

I still want to see Dube with JG and SM.

Then you can have Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane, Lucic-Backlund-Bennett

But most of the time he IS playing north-south, smash mouth hockey. He forechecks as aggressively as any Flame forward, and more than most.
He should carry the puck less - that’s where he is less effective. He’s a cleanup man - he plays best coming in late and receiving a pass, or digging.

So we lose Bennett for nothing on waivers to....lose someone else to the expansion draft anyway?
I'm not sure that makes anything better. I'm certain you can get something decent for Bennett come the trade deadline even if not right now.

It appears Brad Treliving is seeing asset after asset slip away for nothing, Kylington for Edler, Jankowski & Brodie for Kadri, Frolik & pick for Zucker, Bennett & Hanifin for Hall & Vatanen...

Some weird examples there.

The last one for instance would have the Flames acquiring 2 rentals who might now be here instead of Hanifin?

Kadri trade is classic Calgary being on the NT list.

Frolik+Pelletier for Zucker. Not sure I see that much out of Zucker to want his cap hit on the team over a prospect like Pelletier

Kylington for Edler was only happening if Edler signed an extension which he wasn’t going to do.

Also, 'slip away for nothing' - what?

We still have Kylington (and Edler costs $6M and is a UFA), we used Brodie's cap hit for Tanev, we still have Pelletier, and we still have Bennett and Hanifin.

But yeah, assets are flying out the window.

Tre on Bennett on 960 a while ago

And kudos to Pat for asking directly about his future on the Flames which has been an outside conversation

- Bennett's agent decided to have a conversation with the media about a change of scene
- Tre likes to keep conversations about players in house, he would never break the confidence of a player
- Bennett is a Flame
- they think he is a hell of a player
- they expect him to do a good job for the Flames
- they will decide about his and anyone else’s scenery

I like Tre’s response

“We will decide”

TL;DR: Treliving does not have time for Bennett’s agent’s ####

They are welcome to decide Wards scenery too, while they're at it.

Yup.

know who else tries so called Junior moves? Tkachuk. And Gaudreau has plenty of puck carrying attempts broken up himself.

Bennett will be traded. But I respect Trelivings candor on the subject.

And I really hate how Bennetts tenure with the Flames has transpired. I don't care about which sides fault it is, it just sucks. I'm a big Bennett fan, good dude and a good player, just not a fit in CGY any more.

With the outrageous prices people were paying last season at the deadline, Tre might be wise to wait until this year’s deadline. Sam should easily fetch a first rounder, or a good, young asset.

You hit the nail on the head.

My thoughts....

Shiny new thing Ritchie looked good last time out. I'd give him a go for a couple more games and then Levio a long look as suggested.

Levio is coming off an couple seasons with injuries and not a lot of game action. That takes time to work through (or not), but the challenge presented by the short season doesn't afford that time.

Once again Sam Bennett demonstrates he does not have the defensive awareness to be an NHL centreman, it is indisputable.
