Right now the Flames are probably losing Tanev in expansion draft. He is our best defenseman. Gio at this point shouldn't be protected. If that the case they might as well move him
Backlund too. I think he could get us a quality return. Bennett can move to center and we need to look at 2021 draft and positioning for expansion draft. This team is very young still minus Gio and Backlund they are one of youngest in league.
Next summer Johnny can be extended. If he doesn't then he might have to go too but no backs and gio makes resigning players a ton easier and selling might get us a top prospect this draft
|
You will get ripped for this take but I agree with you except I don’t think we lose Tanev because we should protect him and expose Gio. Gio can say he will retire if picked and deter Seattle from picking him.
In a perfect world we would trade Backlund for an expansion exempt RWer and slot Bennett into the 3rd line center role and be able to protect him but I know none of this will happen.
In reality we will not make any trades, keep the coach and protect Backlund and Gio only lose Bennett or Tanev for nothing.
It’s painful cheering for this team.

Friedman is turning in to an instigator
He should call Eichel’s agent and see if he is open to a change of scene

He's been lowkey doing that for a while, always following up with the "whoa, I was just saying" response when it blows up as intended.

I found it funny on his 31 Thoughts podcast episode following the Bennett report he put out.
He said something about "once the report got out, neither the player or the team were happy that the trade request had leaked", as if he wasn't the one that went digging and then threw it out on national TV...

Good idea, we need him stirring up stuff on other teams so we can swoop in!

Exactly. And even in his initial report, the phrasing wasn’t directly about a trade request, it was about if he would be open to a change of scene, and the agent’s response was that he would be open to it. Reportedly blindsided Tre.
Be great to see him take his act to other teams

Not that I think the Sabres would ever trade Eichel, but what the hell.
Monahan, Tkachuk, Bennett for Eichel and Hall
Then extend Hall
Gaudreau - Eichel - XXXX
Hall - Lindholm - XXXX
Major shake up, improvement on the speed in the top 6 as well. Incentive for Johnny to sign a long term deal to stay on Eichel's wing.
Then bring in an actual real NHL coach.

If that man becomes available, you tell the Sabres that anybody here is on the table.

We are not going to have a shot at Eichel in my opinion even if Tkachuk is on the table.
He is going to likely want to play for the Rangers, Kings or Hawks as examples and they can all blow our offers out of the water. Maybe the Rangers offer Lafreniere and Kakko along with the cap they need to send.
Tkachuk might be of interest to Buffalo but guys like Monahan, Gaudreau who have very little team control left are not moving the needle for the Sabres.

He can want to play for whomever - but according to capfriendly Eichel does not have an NTC or NMC until 2022-23, so he will have to go where he is told.

End of the day I doubt that is here. We don’t have great assets that Buffalo will want. All we can offer is lesser players who are similar aged or older

Depends on timing of deal. Maybe draft day 2021 and our pick is already set. Right now this team can't afford to make that trade. Probably not in off season but definitely not right now
Covid is going to make in season deals tough for Canadian teams. If eichel needs to sit for 14 days and the Flames need to be without him and johnny and Monahan for 7 to 8 games. Kind of cripples their chances of making playoffs

I get teams need elite centers to be elite teams but you still need more. Otherwise your team is well like Buffalo or Edmonton? The oilers have 2 elite centers and its got them where?

Eichel+Skinner $19M cap
For
Monahan+Tkachuk+Bennett+Ryan 19.075M cap
Gaudreau-Eichel-Mangiapane
Skinner-Lindholm-Dube
Lucic-Backlund-Leivo
Ritchie-Gawdin-Simon
I don’t really like that forward group but gets the Flames Eichel. Keeping Johnny becomes key here.

Switch Bennett and Ryan for Lucic maybe...that Skinner contract is bad and feel like Buffalo can take a less bad contract back.
Eichel+Skinner
for
Gaudreau + Monahan + Lucic + Conditional 1st (Feel like Buffalo will want a pick in the deal no matter what)
Tkachuk - Eichel - Mangiapane
Skinner - Lindholm - Dube
Bennett - Backlund - Leivo
Simon - Ryan - Gawdin

He may not have a NTC, but if a player of his stature comes out and says he wants to be moved - he will be moved. And will have some ability to influence where.
But probably not to Calgary.
