Im starting to believe the folks that say this is an ego thing with Tre if he didnt want Sutter. The guy clearly seems to want nobodies so he doesnt get challenged. Im sure even Bob was too much him.

Mile did the work for us.
The rumour is still really weird to me. If it's true, the implication is that Murray Edwards leaked it to the media.
I can't see any benefit for him doing that.

^^I thought that is what people were saying when he took over the Kings! If anything the Flames would be the hardest working team.

I remember media people laughing at the hire. Darryl obviously got the last laugh. Amazing that anyone would bet against the guy. He is an elite hockey coach.

Don't the Flames have four other owners? I get they don't have Edward's control, but they are probably at least informed on what's going on, and they do probably give input here and there.

Could have been Maloney, Conroy, Burke, Pascall, anyone in the chain of management at the time.

Sutter's cup wins were more recent than Ward's.
Flames are playing 2011 hockey now anyways.
I don't put much into the Carcillo comments, the guy is a problem himself and other players have come out and confirmed that.
2004 Flames alumni have never said anything bad about Darryl. That's good enough for me.
This talk about the game changing and passing Darryl by is irrelevant. If you are smart, you adapt, like Darryl does. The key thing that Darryl brings is leadership. The x's and o's are over rated. Both Ward and Gulultzan are "x's and o's" guys; it means nothing if you can't lead the players. This team needs a leader. Someone to calm them down when they face adversity. Someone to deflect pressure away from them. Someone to motivate them properly. Someone to bring this group together. These are the things that Darryl excels at and is exactly what this team needs.

I don't think it's ego. If you look at all of Treliving's hires and interviews he's mostly interviewed coaches that don't have a lot of clout and wouldn't be able to challenge his authority. Remember he came from the Coyotes where Tippett won a power struggle with his buddy Maloney so that's always in his mind when assessing coaches. Also let's not forget this organization hired Darryl Sutter to be coach and GM so they aren't adverse to falling in love with a successful head coach and giving him power. Has he even interviewed a single veteran coach that's had a lot of NHL success? I believe he interviewed Crawford but that was probably as a favour to Burke. It's pretty inexcusable that he's on his 4th coach and he's never really interviewed a veteran coach with a track record. If you look around the league a lot of the better teams have coaches that have won before. Trotz, AV, Julien, Laviolette, Quenneville, DeBoer, etc keep getting jobs because they win at every stop. Even Tippett has the Oilers playing up to their talent level. Why wouldn't you at least interview Boudreau or Gallant? It just doesn't make sense if winning is the ultimate goal.

No, they realize it. I certainly do. The point being missed is that ownership was still high on Darryl Sutter and Treliving went his own direction. He went with Peters and we know how that turned out. Now, he's paying for it given the circumstances of the day.
If there was interest on Sutter's part it may have been gone this past fall or he may simply have been unavailable with his Ducks association. The ship has likely long since passed, but I think that news paints a picture and its not a great one.

I really wish Treliving would just bring Boudreau in as coach.
People say his records were only good in Washington and Anaheim because those teams were good.
So, he can coach good teams to good records you say?
Sounds like a great way to find out if this Flames roster is actually any good or not. If a proven coach with a record of coaching good NHL teams to good records can't get this team to do anything, then you know the team needs a massive overhaul.

Apparently everything he does has a purpose and is geared towards winning. I read he coaches shift by shift and that he gives players in game tasks to keep them motivated. Including the things he says about certain players to the media or talking about the other team as having the best players in the world... So if said player proves he can rise to the challenge and beat that player across from him he is going to gain a lot of confidence as the underdog!
Never mind X and O's we are not going to win if this Flames team is not motivated. If the Flames can't be motivated enough to win 1 or 2 games in a row, how can we win a 7 game series...? Sutter teaches to win a bunch of 1-0, 2-0 games and if the score is 5 to4 he wants to know why the other team scored 4 goals. Whether it is the goalie, forwards, or the defensman they won't be making the same mistake twice without him noticing!
The bar is set too low and we need someone to raise it a lot higher for this group. This is one of the reasons I wished we had hired Sutter from the start because then some of the young guys would have learned early what it takes to win consistently and over a long playoff series.
How can these guys make sacrifices in the playoffs if they can't even win 2 games in a row?

Darryl and Lombardi would be an elite combo that could change this team immediately. They're both just sitting there.

I have a lot of respect for Sutter as a coach but I also think those LA Kings were tailor made for Darryl Sutter hockey. When those players started to age out, their results plummeted with it.
Not sure it parallels well with how the Flames are built, nor do I think he'd get the results.
