It is actually very easy to try things that have worked before to see if they will work again. It's stupid to try things that don't work over and over again hoping they will magically start working.
Our entire team gets jammed in our own end repeatedly. It's because our breakout is crap, predictable and never changes.
That is why Ward is a terrible head coach.

I didn’t like Markstrom getting the start — he wasn’t bad but that first goal was stoppable. Wondering if there wasn’t some mental fatigue there with the later decisions to wander from his crease.
As for Ward not starting Rittich in the third, it’s not about letting Markstrom battle on the slim chance you mount a comeback, and then pulling the plug after the 5-1 goal. It’s about getting Rittich going before 100% playing him in the back-to-back. Obvious choice to everyone except Ward apparently. Too short-sighted IMO.

True, but he could try Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Dube or even Backlund while leaving Bennet 3rd line centre with his linemates from the last 2 games.
Or something like:
Johnny-Mony-Mangiapane
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Backlund
Lucic-Bennett-Dube
These are clearly the teams top 9 forwards, so work with them to figure out the best combination.
Why force any of the scrubs to the top 2 lines?

The coaching is so embarrassingly bad that I don’t think you can accurately assess the talent until the coaching is fixed. As far as players go, the Flames have no idea what kind of assets they have to trade, and everyone’s trade value has been diminished by senseless coaching decisions. Not good enough to make the team? Let’s play you on what used to be the top line. Have a line that actually works? Break it up and put the centre out of his natural position on the 4th line because you know he tries to do too much when paired with scrubs. Have a bunch of small, talented players? Get them to play chip and chase.
Flames could have made some noise in the bubble if they didn’t get out-goaltended every single game. They’ve fixed that problem. So why not try lines that actually worked in the past?
I know that they want Lindholm at centre, but this team doesn’t have a single top 9 RW. You have to consider what makes the team better as a whole.
Gaudreau/Monahan/Lindholm>>>Gaudreau /Monahan/random scrub
Tkachuk/Backlund/Mangiapane>Tkachuk/Lindholm/Mangiapane
Lucic/Bennett/Dube>>Lucic/Backlund/Dube
Minor leaguer/scrub/tweener>minor leaguer/Bennett/tweener
You have to consider how the whole team fits together, not just whether a single player may benefit from being assigned a particular position. It is, after all, a team sport. Ward actually found a way to make all 4 lines worse, a feat I would not have considered possible.
I didn’t like Ward when he was coaching the Sens to the worst special teams in the league, and he’s no better as a head coach.

This team, for whatever reason, is inconsistent, game to game, period to period. Long stretches of looking good, long stretches of looking terrible.
Something has been 'off' for this team for years and I'm not sure how you fix it without making massive roster moves. Not because it's one player or one line, but as a whole, this team hasn't clicked for a long time, save for one half of a season under Peters. The players, the chemistry, it's just not there. It's groundhog day, yet again.

Maybe you tell him that he has to for the good of the team.
The current configuration of too many centers and not enough wingers is clearly hurting the team in a big way.

Yeah understandable.
Then maybe ask him before the game at least, which should be less awkward. It’s common sense, at least put someone good if not best on your top line; if he is good, why health scratch him? Same for Bennett, sit one game, then you are on the top line.

This is good. Hoping for Treliving and Ward to be fired, Top 10 pick, and massive changes in the off-season.

I feel like people who are hoping Ward gets fired are just clinging to false hope. Yes, Ward is a problem. But we also just have a really inconsistent group of players. The whole make-up of this team is just mediocre, from top down.
I think championship teams have the following:
1. Elite #1 center (eg. Crosby, Toews) - we don't have that
2. Elite #1 defenseman (eg. Hedman, Pietrangelo) - we don't have that
3. Elite goaltender (eg. Vasilevsky, Rask) - we have that!
4. Good coach (eg. Cooper, Julien) - we don't have that
5. Depth scoring and shut down defense (eg. TB and Chicago's forward depth when they won their cups, LA and St
Louis's defense when they won) - we don't have that
6. Buy in to a team system and identity (eg. St. Louis's and LA's power game, TB's structure) - we don't have that
At this point, I'm hoping Ward gets fired too. We hire a competent coach and we might go on a run like the Hartley run and the Peters division championship. But those runs will not last and they will definitely not win us a Cup. We just have way too many pieces missing. This team is the definition of mediocrity and has been for a long time.

Many people have had this conversation many times. Over and over again.
We saw a change in style of the second placed team in the entire league post all star game when Peters started preparing them to play the way they need to in the playoffs (as if he had dons anything with Carolina there)
We have three proven lines plus an upgrade in goaltending vs smartest guy in the room and his trusty blender
It’s kind of exhausting
